One of my goals for #2024 is to #declutter & #consolidate my tech and regain control over my own data - both physical as well as virtual.I don't have a clear idea of what all that might entail yet but here's a tentative list:1. Email - a good family plan that also offers catch-all email routing.2. Books - Preferably not Kindle but don't see any alternatives in India.3. Personal media - Google? Homelab? self-hosted VPS?4. Plex? Jellyfin?What else? Suggestions welcome! :)

@shrikant got rid of 4 this year. Apple TV + SFTP works much better. 1. Hope to move to @fastmail mid 20243. I’ve had this sorted for years now, with my home server with 20TB configured in RAID5 and RAID6 (hardware RAID)

@shrikant Email - use a business email service (such as titan/hostinger) attached to a domain you own (first name last name.com). Have multiple emails accounts for each part of life (accounting @you.com, spam@you.com, work@you.com). Bonus points if you learn how to backup your emails to your NAS to own your emails.Synology NAS - store all media, free one click cloud storage, DOCKER, jelllyfin, torrent box. @mikebenjaminto Wow, thanks so much for the detailed response!! 💯I have found a self-hostable proxy called erine.email for the catchall but I'm not sure if I'm savvy enough to install it on my droplet. Plus not sure I can spare time to deal with spam, DKIM, etc. and manage/maintain it. Would prefer managed email, if possible.Synology has multiple reccos in these comments! Might be one of the first ones I'll pull the trigger on.Remarkable does not ship to India yet. :(

@mikebenjaminto Synology is one. But, in the spirit of 1-2-3, I'm also thinking of setting up either NextCloud or Immich locally. Or both.

@shrikant Another suggestion I just began to research today was UmbrelOS * https://umbrel.com/ * It is an ENTIRE OPERATING SYSTEM built to self host applications. They started as a bitcoin mining app first (which is still in their app store) and now made this operating system. You can buy their product (simmilar to synology) or download their program for free from their website and install locally on old laptop. also has free program for locally hosted ai. Cost =$0 if you have extra old PC:)
