So if I've downloaded a 13GB full-install package, why does the install process need two hours of flat-out full network bandwidth to do the install? What was the point of the 13gig download.

Multiple stalls dogging me in updating an older macbook in various ways.Last attempt was best, got to 41sec remaining but then it tried to turn into a drone – full fans going. At next peek it showed that peaceful rainbow cloud image and nothing else on screen. Left like that for 30 min just in case, finally gave up and restarted to see it was still on the old OS (Big Sur).Trying a Big Sur update - maybe that'll create a happier starting place, so trying that.Stubborn machine this one.

@ottaross I have an Ubuntu machine on 20.04 that I want to upgrade to 22.04 and it just will not, claiming a lack of space ... which is not the case. It annoys me.

@ottaross @Nerdfest I find Ubuntu upgrades so frequently go awry that I find it easier to back up my data, then just do a new instal of the latest distro and reimport my data A pain in the ass, but honestly less hassle that the hours of yak-shaving whatever is going wrong with my upgrade attempt 😂

Cracked the failing-upgrade challenge by instead doing a minor upgrade the OS I was trying to replace first, then moving up after that. Must've been something wonky in that rev of BigSur.I got both old and new machines into the final rev of Monterey, and then could make the migration work, which was the goal of the endeavor in the first place. It failed miserably in initial attempts. A long process but glad to finish it all.

@clive @ottaross I've done dozens and dozens and never had a problem (other than once a repository was offline and I ignored it). This once backs out successfully, but just will not install.

@clive @ottaross Solved! Or currently upgrading anyway. Problem was a misleading error message. It claimed I needed more space in /boot, but I have it stripped down to a single kernel. Problem was old kernels needing to be purged for some reason though. This machine had not been imaged since 2015, so there were quite a few to be removed. Had to get it down to a single kernel that way as well.

@ottaross Still a little amazed that I've been upgrading this machine that long. It is a 10 year old laptop, but can still be used for most games, etc. It's basically a file server at this point though.

@clive @ottaross I replaced that same model a few months ago with a BeeLink mini PC for the power savings. It was still going fine though.
