       In defense of Nikki Haley -- ugh, I can't believe I just wrote that -- I was taught something very close to the "Lost Cause” myth in a history class at a large-ish public university. I very well might have argued in good faith afterward that the Civil War wasn't about slavery. After all, a PhD historian explained to our class why it wasn't. He was the expert who'd studied this. Why would I doubt him?Of course, unlike Nikki, my friends and I went on to learn the truth of it.

       @tek @tek Well said. As someone who grew up in #Louisiana, attended the state’s largest public school, and is a recovering libertarian, you hear a lot of things from people who seem reputable and well-informed and you tend to find truth in what you hear/read because things seem like reasonable answers to a lot of questions bouncing around in your head.

       @tek I am hoping that she knows better and she is just red-bating; she needs votes from South Carolina's GOP primary a lot more than California Democrats... and they're not here for a history lesson. Especially one they're on the wrong side of. It does speak to a streak of cowardice I suppose, but it's the same one that led her to take the job as Trump's UN ambassador. Which worked out for her. 🤷

       @eviljarred Yep, that's exactly it. Huh, these people seem smart and qualified to talk about this. Guess that must be how it is!I’m very sympathetic to people who learned those things just because of where they happened to be born. It'd be easy to go your whole life never hearing something different, other than people on TV and radio laughing at the people with other ideas.

       @tek ugh. hard nosed politics would necessitate Dems skewer her into irrelevancy  with this … but Dems won’t maintain the outrage long enough to sway minority voters from their image of the GOP as an aspirational brand, rather than what they are: a feverish, besotted Ruth's Chris steakhouse 401K pitch that only fills the advisor's pockets.
