Hey how does that quantum computing work? They say it's superior to regular computing because it uses bits in superposition so....In regular computer 1+1 equals 10, so in quantum computer it would be 1or0 + 1or0 equals 10 or 0 or 1?And how's that even useful?.... 😂

@ThatCrazyDude magic. Because it is sufficiently advanced technology.

@ThatCrazyDude I think it is along the lines of being able to assess all the outcomes simultaneously and choosing the right one. As opposed to trying all the outcomes one at a time and finding the right one.Or being able to do the calculations with the partial results, and then picking the right option, with the correct result of the partial result, at the end of the complex process.

@DazzaNZ I'm kinda thinking it's just another way to extract money from the governments and the simple folk who'd invest in anything "new and cool and all", not unlike wind power, electric cars, NFTs, my personal favorite fusion energy and all that bullshit. But maybe I'm too cynical at this point.... 😂

@ThatCrazyDude @DazzaNZ If you can't explain something in simple terms, you don't understand itFeynman was also quoted as saying: I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics.Pretty interesting thing to hear from a guy who won a Nobel Prize for explaining quantum mechanics better than anyone ever had before.https://kottke.org/17/06/if-you-cant-explain-something-in-simple-terms-you-dont-understand-itI think quantum computing is complete and utter horseshit but I would be more than happy to be proven wrong.

@FortyTwo @ThatCrazyDude I heard that in the large hadron collider project. The machine, the detector and the computer analysis are all so complex that none of the project teams could fully explain the operation to the other teams.

@DazzaNZ @FortyTwo they can explain how the collider works though. Heck, I can explain it in simple terms even though I'm no scientist. But this quantum computing thing.... I mean, c'mon! If you have undetermined input, how in the world can you possibly get determined output, which is the only way I can see that could be useful for something.Unless, of course, they plan to use it for weather prediction, in which case it would be always right, as in it will say it will rain or not 😂

@DazzaNZ @ThatCrazyDude has the collider produced any useful results?Improved life in any measurable way?

@FortyTwo @DazzaNZ well, they (CERN) kinda made the internet global and they came up with HTTP, so in that sense..... It was a side project, of course, but still.

@ThatCrazyDude @DazzaNZ I'm not saying they're not smart. Of course they are.Neil deGrasse Tyson is smart but he thinks trans women have no physical advantage in women's sports.Nobody bats a thousand.

@ThatCrazyDude @FortyTwo Yeah. My understanding of long term forecasts, like two weeks, is: Imagine that the forecast is written on elastic, pined to the date on the calendar on the day it was made. But at the two week mark the elastic is stretched or shrunk, and can miss alignment by a few days.

@DazzaNZ @ThatCrazyDude most climate models completely disregard cloud cover. An overcast day can lower temperatures by up to 10°F.

@FortyTwo @DazzaNZ the way i see it, there are scientists and there are logic wizards nowadays. Tyson kinda falls in the latter category, while Sabine Hossenfeder is one of the former. Her sense of humor is suboptimal to say the least, but at least she doesn't peddle bullshit 😂

@FortyTwo @ThatCrazyDude Yeah, that's pretty crazy. Overall I am pretty crap at running fast. In my mid 20s, I had equal speed in running to the fastest woman in my class. She and I had fun always trying to beat each other in cross country running. Two thirds of the men could easily run faster than me.

@ThatCrazyDude @DazzaNZ I don't know a lot about her, honestly.I'm sure she's a polymath.I'm just saying that with all the money spent on the collider(s), mankind has derived minimal benefit."It shows 'promise'" but not a lot of useful results.Usual disclaimers apply.

@DazzaNZ @ThatCrazyDude Clouds as a whole have a net cooling effect of about 9°F on our climatehttps://www.wave3.com/2019/09/27/behind-forecast-how-clouds-affect-temperatures/So, I was off by a degree. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@FortyTwo @DazzaNZ she's one of those who get flak for calling bullshit on net-positive energy balance in fusion experiments and questioning the wisdom of pumping even more cash in particle colliders even though they contribute nothing to humanity. All you need to know, really 😂
