The herd acts as guinea pigs and as long as the herd can tolerate enough contrarians, it gets enough stopped clocks to survive whatever happens. It gets Darwin's adaptability instead of producing a butterfly with a foot-long proboscis that dies out completely if someone picks an orchid.It's obvious from even a cursory glance that whatever is going on with social organization, you'd better not fuck with it. Until "nation-scale fucking with it" was invented in the 20th century, population-wide destruction only happened every few centuries.
