finally having a chance to slow down and reflect on this trip, and I keep bursting into tears—especially when I think about my grandmother, and how vulnerable she is, and how I exerted the entire force of my will & privilege to do everything I could to keep her safe, and how everyone alive deserves that same treatmentand how I promised to see her again later in the winter, and how I would do it all again, because I realize that nothing is more important.

well, my jetlag has stabilized to having me wake up at 5 AM for the past few days. that’s fine, I don’t mind spending my evenings in a sleepy daze with Meow Meow curled up and attached to me like a furry barnacle

The big box of stuff we sent to ourselves has arrived. I tried to pick it up yesterday but I couldn’t manage it on my own.In Japan I could have takkyubin’ed it directly to my house, or at least the staff at the post office would have lent me some twine. Here, the postal worker KICKED my box out of the storage area, and was like, “how are you going to get this home” while making awkward intermittent eye contact with me in my Flo Mask.J-M is upper-body-strength-ing it home for me today.

My PhD defence is coming up, but I feel like I already got my passing grade in the final project of my four-year degree in surviving a pandemic with my loved ones: this trip to Japan with my mom 😁I feel extremely qualified to be the advisor for J-M's band that is trying to make it through the next four months covid zero so they can actually rehearse to high fidelity and fulfill a touring opportunity without disabling themselves 👍This degree comes with so much "employment" opportunity 🙃

Tonight we're visiting my parents for a little celebration after my PhD defence (combined with a certain dear someone's birthday). I haven't left the apartment (apart from one journey to the post office) since returning from Japan in early November. My laundry bottleneck is, unexpectedly, bloomers!!!! (I wear them under my dresses and over my tights, to prevent chub rub.) Guess I'll crab-walk to my parents' place 😆

Stumbling out of the post-PhD defence fog, I’m thinking about returning to Japan in February. J-M has been dreaming about Japan throughout all of these hard times, and I want to show him the quiet, covid-safe Japan life and how beautiful it can be. I want to buy him so many treats!!! And I want to see Hokkaido for the first time, and discover if it really could be our respite from the boiling atmosphere here—both literally and figuratively.

We booked it: we return to Kyoto in February. Because travel rightly begs justification these days:- returning to Japan was the dream that kept J-M going during the hardest times in chemo in 2020–2021. Remember when everyone thought the pandemic would be over by winter? This post-chemo celebration has been postponed a LOT.- I need to keep my promise to my grandmother that we'd be back this winter.- we're scoping out neighbourhoods to move to so we never have to fly again.
