@johnnydecimal Taking a deep look at the J.D system and would like to get your take on tools like fSearch or Search Everything. I’ve been leaning on tools like these for years in order combat the same problem J.D solves – I’m curious if these things make J.D even more useful/fast (even if they are made somewhat redundant by J.D’s file system)

@pgv Anything that helps you search faster is a good thing — but yeah, with JD I’m mostly searching for one thing, which is the JD ID.But if these tools help you find items with the ID that are scattered around your system and they help you do that faster, that’s great.I’m a Mac user so I use Spotlight’s index, usually via Alfred.

@johnnydecimal in practice, do you feel like you find yourself reaching for spotlight or just hitting the file manager directly. At the end of the day – the search tools are great, but I hate that I have to reach for them just to find anything (ergo interest in J.D), but the reason for the line of question is trying to figure out what my future workflow looks like. Now, to be fair, I haven’t read through your workbook yet, so it may be answered there and it’s just a question of “read and find out”

@pgv It’s just quicker when you know the number. My canonical example is my timesheet. 14.11. So I can either:1. Switch to Finder.2. Open a new Finder window.3. Click folder 10-19.4. Click folder 14.5. Click folder 14.11.5. Double-click file 14.11 Timesheets.xls.-or-1. Activate Alfred.2. Type 14.11.3. Press Return. So I’m not searching as in I-don’t-know-where-it-is. I’m using my OS’ search index as a launcher.
