@SuperSnekFriend @Fash-E That's how I counted it, and I cast my vote for them because, between the Italians (mainly Rome), the Germans, and the French, I think that the Romans most consistently were the best. They constantly won victories against numerically superior enemies, and with good leadership won against the Huns (dramatically different from anyone else) and against the Parthians/Sassanids (the only peer to Rome). Discipline, tactics, and strategy are the most important factors in any military, and the Romans took on everything in the world and won.The Germans are definitely good, but I can't quite give it to them, and the French likewise. The Romans simply did it all, they beat hordes, equals, and the wild card, losing only to betrayal and infighting. I will give honorable mention to the Scandinavians (muh ancestors) for the Caroleans and Gustavus Adolfus, but I'm less familiar with their history.

That was not carried on in the late Hundred Years' War and English wouldn't see land parity again with the French until the end of the Napoleonic War.I suppose if you included the American colonies and the Anglo-Celtic South as "the English", then the English would have a better claim to best military.

@Fash-E Depends on how you define the peak. One lifetime? Rome was untouchable under Caesar (though most of it's fighting was internal). A couple lifetimes? Germany from post-Napoleon Prussia to Nazi Germany stands out even against overwhelming odds. Overall consistency might actually be France but this about civilizations at their peak.

@SuperSnekFriend @Fash-E @Frondeur The South is pretty much the last time any American forces proved to be better man-for-man than their opponent as a whole, the great majority since has been crushing numerical weight (technical edges were so mixed across all sides in WWII especially).Credit where credit is due for the English though, I forgot that they won some lopsided battles.I decided mostly focusing on the conflicts long-term, i.e., the Romans beating the Gallic and German tribes in campaigns, not just battles, where the numbers were against the Romans, because the tribes were less organized and disciplined but the Romans still won across a huge territory for the numbers involved. Basically as 'grand scheme', overarching success as possible.

@kf01 @Fash-E Well more specifically it's skill at warfare at their peak. America has power projection and cultural influence but we aren't exactly a military culture. The Romans come to mind first with an incredibly well organized military system, but I take away a few points for mostly fighting smaller, less advanced enemies at their peak. Germans alternatively developed an incredibly martial culture and arguably performed the best in comparison to their contemporaries of any culture, especially since they fought mostly near pear powers and multiple of them throughout history. They failed to establish a lasting world power, however, which takes points from them. That's mostly the conclusion I've reached with it being one of those two.

For both Rome and Germany I was comparing their military performance at the peak of their civilization to surrounding powers and generally in context. I think the question is where has the U.S peaked. We have the most global influence right now or in the last twenty years. Yet our military is being hollowed out barely able to keep things together. The U.S is no longer capable of winning conflicts even against many smaller states, foreign countries are beginning to turn their own way, and almost all interest in or respect for the military is lost. Even during the cold war we relied more on economic and political power, warfare was important but we weren't on the level of a truly martial culture. We are arguably at our peak in terms of global power projection but do not have the warfare capabilities to properly back it up. France and Britain are serious contenders though.

@kf01 @kvit The Cimbri tribes and Goths dealt major defeats to elite roman forces in the early republic and late imperial eras, if the Kaiserschlacht offensive had gone the other way in 1918 or if Stalingrad had gone the other way in 1942-43 then Germany would have won those respective wars so they were very close, and Prussia punched way above its weight in the Seven Years war which is why people considered it the #1 land army in Europe afterwards.

@kf01 @kvit They also pushed the Romans from the Elbe back to the Rhine in the age of Augustus. I mean I don't know what more they need to do. Really the Rhine was more there protecting the Romans from the Germans. Also, the Kaiserschlact was pushing the Entente back, both sides were nearing breaking point. The Germans ended up suffering mutineers first and that led to their loss but the French and English troops were very near munity themselves so it was also very close.
