@nivrig I find it's not even about money, it's the convenience. If I torrent a video then it's just a file that I can play on any device I want whenever I want however I want. When I'm using a streaming service then I have to access it using a browser or whatever app they peddle, and the content I purchased could get removed at any time. It's a strictly worse user experience all around. And I'm expected to pay for the privilege?

@yogthos @nivrig content creators need money. but the middle man is always inserting himself into the picture and making the experience worse to extract more money. for himself, not the content creatorthe problem is always the middle man parasite. if content creators and consumers could interact directly, content creators might even make more money because the bulk of media income isn't even going to themnow all we need is a large neutral digital content deliver mechanism that sits in every homehmmm. hmmm. hmmm 🤔 🤔 🤔 then it's just a matter of the right decentralized softwarehmmm. hmmm. hmmm 🤔 🤔 🤔

@accretionist @yogthos @nivrig we just don't have the simple and direct (and automated however we want) money transfer system.

@wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig crypto(dodges rotten vegetables)but seriously there is more to crypto than that abomination bitcoin and the crypto bro casino circus. decentralized money, as the original dream, has nothing to do with all the disgusting cruft that came after. sometimes you need to go back to the original dream

@accretionist @yogthos @nivrig I'm unconvinced but maybe. I don't get why we can't do this with banks and some new @w3c money transfer protocol.

@accretionist @wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig @w3c Crypto (even an hypothetical version that didn’t melt down Antarctica) doesn’t look like an answer. It promises to work without government as if this was the problem but most payment systems are already private. I prefer to have govt watching my transactions than corporations+govt. At least I have in theory the right to change my government.

@accretionist @wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig @w3c The payment system in Brazil is called PIX and really unless fear of govt is your primary concern it’s perfect for daily life. You can use it to pay for your coconut on the beach as well as for dentist or accountant invoice. It works only inside the country of course but it covers most needs. It acts both as instant micropayment and a simplification layer on top of traditional banking.

@santiago @accretionist @yogthos @nivrig @w3c so does it let you pay a friend directly from your bank to theirs? is there an API? can you post an account name etc online that people put in their app to pay you?

@wjmaggos @accretionist @yogthos @nivrig @w3c Not sure about how API works but there’s one since it’s integrated on many sites. As an individual or business can just give either your phone number , national ID, email or even a random string and ask someone to send money to it.It’s also easy to generate a QR code to ask for a specific amount.

@accretionist @chongliss @w3c @yogthos @nivrig @santiago Bandcamp is a middleman. They can take down the content or start doing shady shit anytime, without the say of the IP owners. I buy from there via PayPal and my credit card, not my banking app. Bandcamp is a paywall model, which will always be less popular than paid or ad-supported streaming. It also can't go truly viral cause links won't auto play.

@wjmaggos @accretionist @yogthos @nivrig @w3c This is the UI in Banco do Brasil (state bank) for example to create your PIX QR code as an individual. You chose the amount or not . You can allow a unique payment or several and even add a product code. Money appears instantly in your bank account. If you go to a beach in Brazil people selling drinks or else will have their PIX number or even such code so you can just scan and pay.

@accretionist @wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig @w3c It’s crazy how the thing didn’t exist until 2020 and now if you try to remove it I am pretty you’ll get a revolution.Fees are not authorized for individuals and very small businesses which explains the wide adoption. Larger companies can however be taxed per transaction at a rate that is not defined by the law. Some banks like Caixa (state) don’t have a fee for businesses yet, others do.

@santiago @wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig @w3c i'm sitting here cynically framing how an attempt to bring this to the usa would bring out the plutocrat funded manufactured outrage machine and they're talking points about this to scare dim bulbs ("socialism!" "fees are freedom!" "love your bank! hate your fellow man!")

@wjmaggos @accretionist @yogthos @nivrig @w3c I wonder how much middlemen like VISA lost with this in Brazil as I guarantee every single small seller prefers this. For example most taxi drivers will be very happy if you use this (they get the cash instantly with no fees unlike credit cards which they are legally forced to accept but takes 30 days to actually pay). It’s also safer than cash in your bag.

@accretionist @wjmaggos @yogthos @nivrig the Brazil's thing is called Pix, and it was created by the "far right" president Bolsonaro, and yeah, it's exactly that, it's a system where you can transfer money easily and fast down to a cent without charges. Banks hate it.It also can be used as a payment processor, which is pretty nifty. When making purchases online, if the store enabled the option, you can generate a QR code with the final price and pay with your phone through Pix. It really makes it way easier for anyone to set up online payment without depending on payment processors. But, as I said, banks hate it, and there's a strong push for the government letting them charge fees for the service for quite a while already, and the leftist in charge already gave some signs that he'll cave.Full decentralization requires bypassing the banking system, or else you'll keep being hostage of these political tugs of war. But bypassing the banking system right now means going crypto with all the bullshitery that follows it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
