@coolboymew Hard mode needs more love. Bland grinds or big bullet-sponge enemies shouldn't be the only difference between a regular and a more difficult game. Sadly, even that typical "hard mode" would be too much for devs to implement, and it's easier just to make it more "accessible" for those game reviewers that want it.

@Moon @caekislove @coolboymew personally i'm in love with what fear and hunger did with its hard mode: the only truly happy endings are locked behind the hardest difficulty and all of these endings are important for understanding the whole story of the sequel. in that game, hardmode also prevents you from saving, so you have to beat the entire game with extra challenges in one attempt in one sitting. it's a great way to convey both "fuck you git gud" and "happiness only comes to those who put in the work"

@coolboymew @Zerglingman As stupid as it sounds, I think fine grained difficulties make the average gamer today feel bad and result in lower sales if included. Their first impression of the game is choosing Hard, getting demolished, then dropping the game entirely instead of trying normal. The gamer of today isn't the gamer of the past. They could maybe hide Hard mode until a normal completion, but only something like 10-20% of game purchases result in completed games (not 100%, just normal endgames).

I often start a game on normal mode blast through the first level without any trouble and set it to hard, and then after a few levels, i hit a huge spike in difficulty and get frustrated

it was eh. i used a custom launcher in the past to be able to set shadows to the absolute lowest. Aside from that, I played fine. The Lightning Returns port was fine too, played it on this computer.

@caekislove @mischievoustomato @All_bonesJones @Moon @coolboymew I played all three on PC and while XIII was the most limited at launch (IIRC only 1080p and 720p worked, anything else screwed up 2D overlays like minimap) they all ended up being "fine" in time.My biggest disappointment was building a new rig with a super speedy Samsung NVMe SSD and finding out that it didn't really put a dent in the crazy long load times in XIII-2 and Lightning Returns. I could copy the entire game directory faster than switching scenes in-game!

@coolboymew @All_bonesJones for the sunken ship puzzle I remember I asked my friend's sister to decipher the clues.But the part that really got me stuck was another one. I can't remember the details now, but there is a point where you don't open a new stage to explore after beating the last stage available, and you have to go back and do something in another stage to unlock another path, and I'm pretty sure they give you hints of that in the game, but I couldn't read them, so I had to go around for literally daysuntil I found it.

@Suzu @All_bonesJones yes, I got stuck forever at these tooIIRC it's simply "talk to frogfucius" and then you can finally move on to bean valley was it?In the remake they have a journal and an indicator on the map lmao. The game literally tell you in the original (BUT WE COULDN'T READ IT)

I remember there was a character that talked about "an old geezer" somewhere, and I was dumb enough to understand English and what "geezer" meant, but smart enough to know about geysers, so I spent a shit ton of time going every place that looked to have something like that, I thought I would find a place with a geyser and a rock on top, and the thing would explode and take me to a high place with another exit.IIRC, Yoshi's Island had platforms that worked like that.

@Suzu @All_bonesJones I was like 5-6 and barely started reading French in the first place, soBut yeah, there's about 2 instances of weird pointless roadblocks like that IIRC. I think the first frogfucius encounter is obligatory? (it won't let you go on otherwise) But I think there's 2? times in the game where you have to go back pointlessly, maybe?Other roadblocks were the marrymore back entrance (it's told by an NPC). The Marrymore exit after the events was a bitch too IIRC. I THINK the other Frogfucius roadblock I have a hard time remembering right now is Star Hill right after getting the Princess back, Star Hill ain't unlock until you go talk to him which was a genuinely bad decision as he tells you a single fucking line and that's itThe Bean Valley one took me forever damn

@All_bonesJones @Suzu the accessories in the original SMRPG were the worst, outside of a few deliberate ones like the Quartz that has no real definition, the rest of the accessories barely told you what they does and you needed the player's guide to get the full description of themThankfully the actual good shit comes later and are somewhat of a "prize" for several things so I equipped them anywaysCan you actually believe I managed to find the 3 Musty Fears' flags and even the fertilizer? >Randomly hug wall in Nimbus town after the events>Find fertilizerHuh???
