@MountainJay @the0ther My brother and I are passionate about helping the homeless because we've both - independently of one another - been there and know how incredibly lucky we are to have gotten back on our feet. Even if they aren’t scamming, they usually are enablers that say things like “we give a hand up instead of a handout.” I’ve seen that line used far too often to find out that what they mean by a “hand up” is just giving out free stuff. Some people literally just need an address, a shower, and clean clothes so they can get a job again and I’m all for providing those things for those people. But for most, homelessness is a symptom.

@Poem435 @MountainJay @the0ther in my area alcoholism and drug addiction is 90% of the problem. Most of the mental illness is part of substance abuse. I just want to donate to a treatment center and then be able to handout a card for a free ride to it that expires within 24 hours because I know the mind of an addict needs a deadline. But I don’t even know how to get something like that going.

@justinerickson @MountainJay @the0ther I agree with you about being skeptical; I'm skeptical about any org, no matter how small, until I personally vet them by looking at where their funding etc is coming from.Mental illness and drug use is absolutely a large part of the homelessness puzzle. And having dealt with addiction in my own family, I know an addict won't accept or make use of help getting clean unless they are ready to do so. Some never are, and that's frustrating.

@Poem435 @MountainJay @the0ther some never are and that’s why I also believe this problem needs to be stopped sooner rather than later. Homeless communities are getting too numerous. The instant gratification that their community accepts and supports only grows as it grows. If there are only five people that are homeless and you find yourself on the streets, you consider that bottom. If there are 300 people all living it up living wild and on drugs, you start thinking you found your people.

@Poem435 @MountainJay @the0ther I haven’t. I’m in Anchorage, Alaska and the local politics are heated on the topic and we have an assembly that would fit right in with Austin, Texas. Addressing simple things like attracting more treatment centers because we have a well know shortage gets polarized thanks to the local media always protecting the self righteous ACLU trained assembly and stirring up controversy for anyone else who opposes housing first only mindsets.

@Poem435 @MountainJay @the0ther the assembly cannot pull their heads out of each others butts. They bought buildings later to be reevaluated as not suitable for homeless. They then took over the largest sports arena in town, the largest venue in town, to shelter homeless because during Covid it wasn’t being used. Now it is still being used as a homeless shelter because they can’t let the conservative mayor get credit for anything and have vetoed or blocked any of his plans.

@Poem435 @MountainJay my compassion for them is running thin to be honest. NYC is looking grim with all the homeless. CATO - choice, addiction, troubled, out of luck. 4 in 10 homeless by choice, 3 in 10 due to addiction, 2 in 10 are troubled aka mentally ill, just 1 in 10 are trying their best but need help. So 7 out of 10 are actually living rough by their own actions. I heard the “CATO” mnemonic and keep coming back to it. I’m sure the A is now a bigger part but still a useful guide.

I’m not very knowledgeable about the whole situation, but that seems better than driving people and businesses out of urban and suburban areas, eroding the whole economy and community more and more.Support services could also maybe be more easily delivered to concentrated populations, and perhaps some of the people gathered there will be slightly more likely to self-organize in more productive ways. 🤔@justinerickson @Poem435

Creating a government bureaucracy to control something only leads to a government lead mafia. Make it legal to grow for yourself, just not legal to distribute. They still roam the downtown streets, steal things, harass tourists, rape each other, kill each other, cause fires, etc etc. And they do everything they can to intimidate any outsider from coming in to their areas, or shanty towns, including cops and firemen.

The issue is that nobody in local politics gets it or has the balls and demeanor to effectively stand up against to the people and media that have invested their whole perception of their moral superiority based on the amount of pity the dish out. And I don’t see that trend ending anytime soon. So I wonder what to do myself in the meantime.
