       TIL in the US police get as low as 672 hours of training, while New Zealand the next lowest Western country requiring at least 1924 hours of training.        @todayilearnedWA police is 28weeks plus probation. Roughly 1200 hrs if we assume a 40 hr week.

       @todayilearned And ... in the US, most of that 672 hours of training is about handling weapons. And target shooting. No training about how to handle domestic violence situations. Police in the US are often hired on the basis that they are former military, because they already know how to handle weapons, and have been trained in, and experienced, combat situations. Perfect training for a civilian police force. Yes. You also get a lot of mouthbreathers who are high-functioning security guards, weightlifters, nightclub bouncers with a marital arts obsession and a steroid habit. It's a low-paying job with crap hours and you have to deal with the dregs of society.

       @todayilearned yeah, here in Las Vegas, police recruits get 24 weeks of training, while nail salon workers need 2 1/2 times as much training. Travesty.
