To save anyone else a few hours: hey, want to use beeeeeg drives with #Windows 98? Maybe via a SATA card? Format that drive in a more modern Windows machine with guiformat first, because Win98’s built in disk formatting will absolutely flip its lid on larger drives. In my case I just used an XP live disc and let guiformat do its work and now I’ve got a 500GB drive working fine in 98 as my storage drive for games and the like. The utility: http://ridgecrop.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm#Retrocomputing

Before anyone asks: yes I tried GParted with a Linux live disc. Not sure what GParted does but it does something odd with the partitioning/formatting that causes Win98 to flip out when trying to write to the drive. So don’t do that.
