https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/gleaners-waging-war-on-food-waste-christmas-appeal-v3mz886qvFor families reliant on food banks and community larders to get through times of hardship, there can be an overabundance of tinned and packaged food donated to help stave off hunger but a lack of fresh produce to meet all their nutritional needs.Teams of volunteers across the country are working to change that by harvesting thousands of tonnes of surplus crops from farmers’ fields that would otherwise be left to rot after the commercial harvest. The act of gleaning, collecting leftover produce from farmers’ fields and margins, is mentioned in biblical passages and became a right of peasants across much of medieval Europe. Now it is being used to wage a war on waste and ensure fresh and nutritious produce is available for everyone who needs it.https://archive.ph/ToF9Y

@HebrideanHecate There's a local grocery store from where I grew up where any expired food is donated (because most likely it was still good), and produce waste that isn't good is given to local farmers for their pigs and compost.
