Watching “It’s a Wonderful Life” and it dawns on me as I am watching the real hero of the movie is Mary Bailey. She is the glue that is holding George’s life together.

She saved the building and loan by handing out their honeymoon money, she rounded up all George’s friends when he was in trouble with the bank examiner, whenever George was in trouble, Mary was there.

@obihahn from well before he is ever aware...... and foregoing wealth and travel alternatives. She's the SAINT in the movie. In the true sense of the word.

@obihahn She found and remodeled their home. Raised 4 kids. Knew what to do when George was busy getting drunk instead of asking for help - and he didn't ask her for help or ideas.Kind of an asshole, now that I think of it.

@Dangerous_Clams @obihahn I found this year that the real key is that Mary saw George act with integrity toward Gower when he was 10. She knew then that he was the kind of man worth giving herself for in every way. She is 100% devoted because he is 100% worth it.Be a good man. Attract a good woman. It’s a Wonderful Life.

@Dangerous_Clams as a side note… when George falls into the pool, he is supposed to be 22 (ballpark) he looks about 40. I looked it up and Jimmy Stewart was 38 when the movie was made. They obviously could fix almost 20 years of aging with makeup. If they remade this movie today, they’d have a different actor to play “young George”, or at the very least the makeup artists would be better.

@obihahn It's in a couple of scenes where his age lines are obvious - but forgivable nits in a fantastic flick.

@Dangerous_Clams another fun fact… Sheldon Leonard who plays Nick the Bartender also plays Sid Nelson, the owner of Norm’s favorite restaurant, The Hungry Heifer, in Cheers.

@Dangerous_Clams and Mr. Potter essentially stole $8000. He knows that Uncle Billy lost it, but he pockets it anyway and moves to have George arrested. Whatever happens to that money? Does potter just pocket it? In 2023 dollars, that’s $125K

@texasmusician @obihahn I also wondered about this. Since the house was totally abandoned it may have reverted to the county and in that case may have been available for homesteading again. I’ve considered researching abandoned property laws during the depression era. Sounds like a good Christmas Day research project.

Thinking about it… George really was a miserable person in this movie, as bad a Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. From the time he was a little kid, he wanted out of Bedford Falls, but circumstances kept him there. Everyone else seemed to get what they wanted out of life, Sam, Harry, even the “riff-raff” like Martini. But at every turn, you see George internalizing his resentment & disappointment until it explodes when he decides to take the fall for Uncle Billy’s screw-up.

Like when they are celebrating Martini moving into his house. Sam Wainwright cakes along and George hangs his head and speaks meekly. You see Mary being happy and giving Martini gifts to symbolize his achievement of home ownership, but George is more focused on the success that others have, success that he wishes he had, and should have, were it not for his sense of loyalty to the business his father and uncle founded.
