Does #sysadmin as a job still exist? Or is taken over by devops and cloud services? If it exists, is it profitable? Do young people become admins?

@mms It definitely still exists. Mostly to operate VMs, but far from everybody uses fancy cloud services for everything.

@mms I don't know. Where I work, we have datacenters and teams for infrastructure, networking, databases, applications etc. If I had to guess, I'd day sysadmins are just less visible. Out stuff maybe is too "boring" for blog posts and hackernews :neofox_up_paws:

@mms I think sysadmins still exist. They work on smaller older systems so they are not very visible. I don’t know what young people do, but I don’t see it as a good career choice.

@mms it’s dependent on technology I’m the sysadmin (aka system programmer) for mainframe systems (z/OS, Z/VM, zLinux), but other technologies in my company have rather devops today.

@mms Sort of. IMO common small and medium-sized companies still need jack-of-all-trades-sysadmin. Also manufacturing businesses might need more of a sysadmin rather than DevOps

@mms Who do you think is fixing data center issues for Aws/Azure/Gcp behind the scenes? Sysadmins absolutely exist. We just hate attention and are too busy working.
