Did you or someone you know work with SSH back in the late 90s and early 2000s? I'd love to get some perspective on something. Please DM me by Signal.

@dangoodin I was a university sysadmin (University of Toronto) at the time SSH was released, and my memory is that we jumped on it basically immediately because it was clearly better than rsh/rlogin. Not only was it more secure, it also had X forwarding over SSH (a big help if you worked from Unix workstations, as was the case for us) and I think various other conveniences.(We built it ourselves from source on our Unix machines, as was common at the time.)

@dangoodin @lyda I still have nightmares about seeding PRNG!

@joelitics @dangoodin @lyda Ah ya, many systems of that era didn't have a build in RNG, and just getting SSLeay (precursor to OpenSSL) to compile was _an exercise_. Especially on "weird" systems like SCO OpenServer / UNIXWare, you had to hope that stuff was packaged on the Skunkworks CD's.

@miah @joelitics @dangoodin @lyda lack of /dev/[u]random on #Solaris was such a pain. When Jonathan Schwartz (?) said that #Sun would treat incompatibility with Linux as a bug, I got that bug filed by a service request and it was implemented not long afterwards.
