Despite drinking coffee for decades, I have no idea what I like, and my grocery store had a coffee sale, so I did my own taste test this morning:So far Dunkin' Original Blend > Starbucks Breakfast Blend > Starbucks Veranda.Veranda was so bitter! I'm hoping I can rescue it by using it to make cold brew.

@grammargirl i've also had OK luck with lower water brewing temps for more overly roasted beans. 80C/175F (like white tea).i admit i had some issues with consistency of strength doing cold brew, so haven't used that as much (other than iced coffee supply in summer).

@grammargirl Sounds like a fun taste test! Cold brew + flavored creamer is a great way to use up a weird brew. I recently realized that ice cream and creamer are basically the same so you can melt a scoop of ice cream and use it for something fun, especially with all the holiday flavors.

@grammargirl I can’t recommend a coffee subscription service highly enough. Trade and Atlas are great choices. Beans are roasted specifically for your order and that makes a huge difference. If you have a Lowe’s Foods nearby, you can usually find relatively fresh roasted beans there, too.

@gdp Thanks! This was all spurred when I tried this Kenyan light roast after seeing something like it win a taste test. But I find grinding the beans annoying, so I was looking for a ground coffee that could compete. I'm just not *that* committed to having the best possible coffee, at least not before I've had coffee, and I only drink it in the morning.

@grammargirl That's a good list. I recommend adding a small pinch of salt to neutrilize the acid in the coffee. That might help. Otherwise, a good syrup should do the trick.

@grammargirl I prefer the Starbucks blond roasts (like Veranda) to their others, but generally I don't care for any of them. I can tolerate them and will buy sometimes, but lately the Dunkin' Original has been my go-to. It's a good daily coffee. Newman's Breakfast Blend is pretty good.

@grammargirl Nice. My favorite recipe for smooth coffee is Trader Joe's Organic Fair Trade "Wake Up Blend" Medium Roast, brewed in an Aeropress at ~165-200°F. We've gotten so used to it we sometimes travel with our mini-Aeropress!

@grammargirl My favorite is Eight O’Clock coffee, which is an east coast brand. I’ve been able to find it in any Walmart, though, and it’s my primary reason for subjecting myself to Walmart experience when I’m out west. I used to like Dunkin so we might have similar tastes. Most Starbucks coffee is bitter and acidic, although the breakfast blend is tolerable.
