Over the past year these are the top arguments against the Fediverse:1. Too left wing2. Too difficult3. Not enough people4. Not enough mutuals5. Too nerdy / too niche6. Too confusing7. Too ugly8. Too many different options and apps9. Too many servers10. Not owned by a corporation (yes, really, one person told me he prefers an oligarch)11. There is no algorithm12. Hard to discover peopleMany of these are based on the attitude and feeling, but there is some truth to it, for example discoverability is still a bit of an issue. I personally find most of the Fediverse web UIs clunky considering the big world standards, but I’m sure they will get better over time.#Fediverse #Mastodon

@AlgorithmWolf You're absolutely correct. We must stop telling people to "join Mastodon" and instead always tell them to "join xxxxxxxx" which is an instance we ourselves know and trust. (I'm a Swede working in cybersec. I thus tell people with the same interests to join an infosec instance I help moderate or a Swedish server I trust the admin of)@rolle

@AlgorithmWolf I help moderate a ~30k user server and I think we do a great job. So while I agree your experience is valid, it's only valid for a subset of fedi admins. That's why I suggest only recommending those instances you personally know do better. As to abrupt shutdowns etc, yes, I'm sort of surprised there aren't any third party "back your Mastodon account here" services. I started writing one myself, it's fully possible.@rolle

@AlgorithmWolf "People simply want to sign up, follow their friends and post. They're not interested in having to run in-depth research just to know where to create their account."My suggestion is that I, when telling people about Mastodon, also tell them which instance to join. So they don't need to know any of that - I, the one who's already the one poaching them to join, knows.I agree with you :) @rolle

@rolle There have been some great replies to this post. I really like the idea of people promoting their instance as opposed to just "Mastodon".I'll have to come up with a short list of instances other than the one I'm on that can be recommended. On the topic of blocked servers, aren't all these listed on every instances About page under Moderated Servers? I'm pretty sure this is a public page not requiring a log in, so could help the what instance are blocked question a bit.

@mikey_in_sd I don't show what instances I block on mine (it's a setting) since I don't approve of the argument "this instance federates with that instance so it should be fediblocked!!1". @rolle

@troed @rolle I didn't know that was a setting for admins. Good to know about that.

@troed @AlgorithmWolf @rolle how do you know about different instances?
