I had this happen to me on Tuesday, and I saw it as an invitation to tell this person what holiday I celebrate, so I dropped a “Merry Christmas” on her.

@obihahn In Austin, a bland Happy Holidays is the norm. 30 miles out in my smaller city, it’s always a cheery Merry Christmas. Even a grinch like me enjoys the authentic holiday cheer. It brightens these dark days!

@slamy my thinking on this… Retail workers, CS Agents, etc. are taught to go with Happy Holidays, because they do not know what particular holiday someone may celebrate, even thought I’d hazard to guess 85% of people do celebrate Christmas. This allows for the recipient of the greeting to respond with the greeting for the particular holiday they celebrate, be it Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, all, none, etc.

@slamy I used to think it was disrespectful to not say “Merry Christmas”, mainly because that has been the prevalent holiday (and still is) forever. But I understand the training coming from the corporate overlords, so I’ll take the “Happy Holidays” greeting. But I appreciate a nice “Merry Christmas from people at small businesses not ruled over by the corporate HR dept.
