The witches practice a form of extreme optimism in which they believe that everything happens for a good reason. In practice, this means that they look for something good in everything that happens, no matter how horrible, and then make that their focus.

In my ghost project, the protagonist encounters a few different religious and philosophical traditions which ultimately reorient his attitude from nihilistic wannabe revolutionary to locus of moral control. The particular aspect of tradition which does this for him is received wisdom. It is something which the New Atheists almost totally missed or ignored, that the assertions, norms, mores, and taboos of prior generations contain information about those prior generations interactions with the word (or God, if you are of a religious persuasion).

One thing that Rifun believes is a positive thing is his ability to talk to his ancestors and gain power from the razana (universal life power, like The Force). Being able to speak to his mother and grandmother brings him immense comfort and strength. Now whether they actually are his mother and grandmother and whether it all really is a positive thing, that may be up for debate.

The MC's in WIP can rely on government officials being corrupt to the marrow, and reap some benefits therefrom. They basically use them to steal from the government coffers. All of that is very traditional and not shocking to anyone. The only non-traditional thing is the very modern slant on the blackmail.

In "Skin in the Game," many of the artist characters see themselves as carrying on various traditions in art. The MC sees himself as one of a long line of "transgressive" artists, Whistler, Toulouse Lautrec, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol, etc. Sebastian sees himself as a modern-day (or near-future-day) Dadaist. Bono "Bunny" Gutman sees himself as a seamstress/dressmaker in the tradition of dressmakers going back to the courts of Europe. Gonzalez "Gonzo 5446" Aquino carries on the traditions of graffiti writers going back decades.

Seeing his brother honoured as a fallen warrior gives Berek some small comfort in that dark hour. There is also (at least in the current draft) a moment just before the climax of the story where Berek and Tomas talk about missing their respective Yule holidays, due to being so far from home. They take what comfort they can in being among friends in another dark hour.

Cammy doesn't think much about holidays or why they matter, but she tends to like them
