We have some good news to share!For years, there have been rumours circulating about the status of the original PAL D1 masters of ReBoot and whether they still exist. After visiting Mainframe Studios yesterday to take a look through their ReBoot archives, we’re happy to confirm that the masters are all here, for every episode of the show!Getting a proper digital transfer of the D1 masters is high priority item for us. It would mean having the entire series in the best possible picture and sound quality, presented as accurately as the day it was rendered. There’s also a library of additional ReBoot content (animation tests, toy commercials, Electronic Arts video game footage, IMAX content) that is currently stuck on the D1 format and we need to preserve it for the future. This would obviously benefit the documentary but ultimately, it would benefit the fans the most!Here’s where we need help. We need a working D1 tape deck to capture all these tapes. Mainframe hasn’t had one for years. We haven’t been able to find anyone in Vancouver, British Columbia, or even all of Canada that has one of these tape decks. @mav @textfiles yeah they'd rather not move the tapes around for obvious reasons, it's best if the tape deck can be borrowed or rented to Mainframe's offices in Canada.

@Polychrome We used to have a Panasonic D1 deck at our work but that was probably 10 years ago. Alas even if we still have it, I wouldn't want to put your master tapes into a deck which hadn't been used or serviced in a decade.

@jamesfmilne TBH I think that'll be the state of most of the decks. :blobcatthink: Best bet is to bring a deck to someone who can verify it's in a good state before putting the tapes in it, but it all starts with actually having access to one.So if you think you can find that deck, why not drop them an email?

@Polychrome https://video99.co.uk would be my go-to for getting tapes mastered to a different format. In Northern America, somewhere like Broadcaststore.com might be able to help, they have at least 1 DCR500 which is a D1 machine.

@bitcrush_io @onfy it won't be digitized because D1 is digital. There won't be digital-analog-digital degradation. This is as close as it gets in quality to the original renders.

@Polychrome They just got an article on /. and they're like "gee, we don't know where to get these machines..." after about a zillion of us told them where known D1 decks could be found. I don't know that getting them read in Vancouver is feasible. The people with working decks seem unlikely imo to ship them. This is a "load all the tapes in a van and drive them to all the way to Florida" project. Be great fodder for their documentary.

@Polychrome Also, don't forget the part about unloading these one of a kind relics out of the van every night so you can protect them in your hotel room. Also great stuff.My one disappointment is it sounds like the initial digitization effort is to capture higher quality source material for their documentary and not as an already negotiated plan to re-release the show in higher quality.

@Infoseepage yeah the Slashdot post got me to boost the post again.Re: only using the footage for their documentary, that would explain why Mainframe is disinterested in using their corporate resources with getting a tape deck.Tho I admit I would watch a documentary about moving the ReBoot tapes in a van.

@Polychrome I'm dubious of their chances to sourcing a maintained machine and associated hardware in the Vancouver area, short of buying one and having it thoroughly serviced. This is not a simple piece of equipment. It had a ton of individual logic boards to do what it does as well as all the tape head maintenance and all the typical perishable rubber rollers and belts and other stuff that typically need replacing on a machine of this age.

@Polychrome I sent them a list of the places I found already. It sounds like Jason Scott and some others involved in the Internet Archive scene have given them some words from the wise already. If they're not smart enough to take it, then I question their actual motivation / project constraints.
