@Terry @Frondeur It's still Spanish, but with some Italian-influenced words. And the accent. The Italian influence is quite noticeable in the accent, IMO. But you'd study Spanish in order to learn it; not Italian.

@Terry @Rasterman i was taking spanish lessons last spring...different online teacher each day...the argentinian teachers had a noticeable accent for certain sounds and insisted i say it like them...namely the ll or y sounds were not soft like a y but harder...so yo became sho instead of yo/joe...or llamar becomes zhamar instead of yamar/jamar...

@Terry @Jonaschuzzlewit @Frondeur What amazes me is how English has a single word for all those cases. :pepe_feelsweird: il/i is masculine singlular/pluralla/le femininelo/gli is for a specific case where the word that follows starts with certain consonants. In Spanish we have something akin to that where words that start with an "a" like águila or hacha are feminine, but use the masculine article "el" because otherwise you'd have two "a"s in a row and that sounds weird. If you wanna see a demented version of that principle, study Irish, where they take lenition to an extreme. It's like their entire language is structured so a sentence is just one continuous sound. Very easy to understand. :disintegrate: :disintegrate: :disintegrate:

@Rasterman @Terry @Frondeur At least when I went to school, they made a point to never say that they were teaching "Mexican" Spanish, but that's what they were doing, even though if there was a school foreign-language trip they went to Spain rather than, you know, the Mexican restaurant down the road.

@EvilSandmich @Terry @Frondeur Interesting. Didn't think about that. It would make sense to teach a Spanish that was relevant, and Mexico is close by; but that's a Plato's cave version of Spanish. :pepe_troll: At least when I was in school, they'd teach us Spanish in language class according to the rules used in Spain, as that's the real Spanish.Likewise, we'd learn British English as the real English, with a few asides to tell us how some words might be used in the USA.Point is... they're scamming yanks by teaching them Mexican. :pepe_fact:
