Oh is this why the started the hole in the ozone layer crap? Because their patent for refrigerant was expiring? Sounds likely.

One thing I never understood about the whole "hole in the ozone" thing is, if it's not naturally occurring, why don't all the penguins and seals in Antarctica have skin cancer? There's also no data before humans starting flying planes around that specific area. The hole has probably always been there. O3 likely thins out at those temperatures in those conditions.

I knew people who could get it back in 2011 for classic cars, but it was hard to get back then; only a few car shops had any. Don't know what the restrictions are on producing it today.

@djsumdog Penguines and seals don't smoke all the chemicals in cigarettes. Look around, the skin on people who smoke ages quicker (on average). Once you notice that, it is quite funny to make wild guesses that stranger smoke or used to smoke."How did you know?", "I read minds!" @the0ther

And, just interestingly, isobutane is an excellent refrigerant. CO2 can also be used, but it is also finicky. NH3 has been used in industrial refrigeration systems for more than a century, works great, but it stinks if there is a leak.

@djsumdog @the0ther ozone is naturally thinner at the poles but CFCs made it far worse. the reason is that the CFCs in the atmosphere don't really go away. they break apart ozone, radiation creates more ozone from o2, and the cfc molecules just break it up again.eye fogging and cancer has been observed in animals in new zealand.addressing the ozone hole is an environmental success story which is why it's under constant political assault, because it's an example of government solving a big, complex world problem, something that many people need to be impossible to justify their worldview.

if you look at the ozone hole maps made up from satellite data, it wobbles around like so many weather phenomena. it's bigger some times of year, or smaller, and it is affected by things like salt spray and volcano spew. the effect of R12 was another one of those ??? theoretical issues, and its effect is hard to measure against the noise of natural variability.

@Moon @djsumdog @the0ther the problem is when retarded hippies draw the wrong conclusion from successfully phasing out CFCs and decide they can just magically do the same with fossil fuelsminor engineering changes to run the refrigeration cycle at higher system pressures to get the temperatures you want out of newer refrigerants is an entirely different thing than completely replacing gasoline and diesel with battery electric. i would bet >99% of people couldn't even tell you what refrigerants their appliances are using without going and looking at the nameplate; that's why it was successful, there was no real reason to care except for one guy malding he couldn't keep refilling his old leaky piece of shit with R12.

@sapphire @Moon @djsumdog @skylar @the0ther It's stable, but it can still be irritating and biotoxic if breathed in. It's also heavier than air, so unless you tip the fucker upside down and vent him, that shit can sit in your lungs. A ridiculous lie, NH3 is not explosive. Like butane it can burn, of course, but refrigerants are normally sealed inside the system, and not allowed contact with air. R132 is not 'latest tech', it is the latest patent boondoggle as detailed in the OP. The molecule also contains chlorine atoms, which are the ones implicated in ozone destruction. R134, another popular 'latest tech', contains no chlorine, but both of them are also persistent greenhouse gases (a separate, but also popular insult). And they both contain hydrogen and fluorine, which means that under extreme conditions, they may release HF as they break down (like R12). Hydrofuckingfluoric acid. It dissolves glass, as well as many metals. Interestingly, NH3 is still (and always) a component of the absorption cycle that's used for refrigeration in remote locations. Instead of a compressor, a small heat source is used -- kerosene or natgas flame, or solar heat... runs without electricity. NH3 and H2O go through some complicated plumbing, give up some heat, get separated, and then are allowed to recombine, and their reunion is endothermic.

like i said initially, it stinks. you would recognize the smell from dilute aqueous solutions used for housecleaning. it doesn't really burn all that well, but it does burn. and farmers have died (farming is dangerous work) from getting anhydrous NH3 on them, it is toxic in sizeable quantities. ammonium nitrate is distantly related, but not the same chemical. also: it is still used in absorption cycle units, which afaik are still sold on the consumer market. a refrigerator just doesn't have all that much gas in it, to be dangerous. but i'm sure it would stink if you ripped open the plumbing of an absorption unit.

i should add here that traces of R12 were detected (parts per trillion? something like that) in the upper atmosphere, so there's that. it is probably guilty of some of what it's been accused of. but in my not so humble opinion, it is still a ??? the new-improved replacement molecules are heavier and more fragile, therefore less likely to make it all the way to the ozone layer. they are destroyed by sunlight and oxygen. and i noticed SF6 is mentioned further down thread -- yeah, that's an interesting one. it lasts essentially forever. thankfully there isn't much of it around. fluoro-compounds are the worst pollutants...

@the0ther You have any questions on this I have a somewhat inside scoop. EPA certified refrigeration tech since 1996. Every teacher I had at school used to joke about the recovery and hole in the ozone layer crap. R134a is 20% reduced heat capacity. It's way less dense. Uses hydrogen instead of Chlorine. Chlorine is a much more dense molecule. They are also very stable chemicals hard to break down to the parent structure elements. Heavier than air. Hard for them to get to the ozone layer.

@the0ther perhaps different refrigerants have slightly different performance, but it's not worth worrying about - just a few percent.but we can use butane and propane and various mixtures of these and similar hydrocarbons to replace most patented refrigerants.increasingly i see R600a (isobutane) and mixtures if R290/R600a used in fridges and air-conditioners.my car uses R134a replacement which is butane and propane. my fridge uses R600a.
