Reminder for any of you kids thinking about going into academia: The "Oh god I forgot about this class all semester!" or "Oh god I don't know any of the material on this test!" dreams don't go away. You just change which role you inhabit. Sometimes.

@Wolven 30 years later I still get the occasional one. Usually I have to teach a class outside my expertise, which I then forget about until exam day, when I walk by the room and realize I didn't create any exam questions.Brains. Amazing things.

@Wolven I had one where I have to take a final in an elementary school level philosophy class I had never attended (I had been teaching at college level for over a decade).

@Wolven Same. The dreams shifting from the one role to the other was a major life milestone for me!

@Wolven It’s true they don’t stop but do morph, like my most recent version: made it to class, appropriately dressed, did my homework, studied for the test, then suddenly realize I forgot to wear an N95.

@Wolven I got ordained in my 40s. The last part was an intensive, 18hr/day, lots of running services/liturgy/history, etc. I had stress dreams for years about being dressed in the wrong robes for an imaginary ceremony.

@Wolven @_L1vY_ reminds me of the old joke:"Mom, I don't want to go to school today. All the teachers and all the kids hate me"."But you have to. You're the principal".

@WolvenThis happened to me. No more student-side dreams, but the new version was even more stressful. Been retired for a few years, and the dreams still show up occasionally, in a 3rd iteration of going back as a substitute teacher and finding out the classroom has no furniture and I have to set it up in the 30 minutes before kids arrive, or wandering around the school trying to find the room I'm assigned to, or wandering around the playground (in the dark!) looking for where the kids have lined up. What's surprises me is that none of the nightmares ever draw on the many actual stresses that happened in teaching.

@Wolven I had a student this (finished) term who didn't do any work until Test 1 in Week 7. They worked hard, but instead of submitting Test 1, they submitted the Practice Test, which was on Week 5, which they had also missed.

@Wolven I haven’t taught in eight years and I still dream about showing up to lecture without any notes and not understanding the topic.

@Wolven Oh and the best one was the one where I was an hour late to teach a class, but no one else noticed I was an hour late, so everyone else showed up at the same time and couldn't figure out why I was apologising!

@Wolven I haven't been a student for 20 years and I haven't taught for 17 years, but a few months ago I had a dream about not being able to find a classroom.

@Wolven I was just like "REALLY brain? REALLY?" It was Such a vivid nightmare, like I remember the bus stop I got off at and everything (the corner over near the Rialto). Ugh. My anxiety dreams from work now are so much less interesting, honestly. Now its just "The server has crashed and all our backups are dead and the auditors just arrived". Which I can go "nah, this is too improbable, its just a dream" at.
