@chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt If you make it manual wouldn't it stop being "continously variable"?

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 They do the dumb thing of "emulating" gear steps for sports-mode manual control, but I never heard of one that would let you slide along the scale trombone style. This should be a thing.

@Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt They do the dumb thing of "emulating" gear steps for sports-mode manual controlOnly bad CVTs do this which is terrible. Literally removing the entire advantage of CVT gearboxes, which is being at the optimal gear gear ratio at any given time.If you want a proper CVT you should buy a classic DAF.

@Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Emulating gears on a CVT is on the same level of stupid as cars that play engine sounds through the speakers...

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 The counter-stupid part is carbrainâ„¢ customers complaining how "it doesn't sound/feel right that when they step on gas the rpms don't jump back and forth as the gears shift, it's creepy weird that it just sounds the same".

@Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Yeah. It's like bruh the revs stay the same because the car is being efficient. If you wanted a cool sounding race car you shouldn't have bought a CVT.

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo I like my CVT for gas milage, disappointed with it in torque production, but mostly scared/adverse to it for the threat of causing irreparable damage to it during periods of stress. I've heard horror stories of the belts slipping and making metal-on-metal contact. The repair is like $7k. @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt

@adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Oh yeah when CVT gearboxes break you got a much bigger bill on your hands than when a manual gearbox breaks.

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo It kinda ticks me off because I have a Subaru OB which has fully symmetrical AWD and is marketed as a light off-road adventure car...but the CVTs make them so fragile. You really can't be tough with them. I got the old 3.6R specifically for the beefier transmission model, but am still paranoid. Just had the transmission fluid flushed and replaced last inspection. @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt

@SuperDicq @chrisisgr8 @adiz Not claiming a drop of expertise here. But from stuff overheard on the internet and elsewhere, Nissan & a few others were all installing CVTs from the same Japan plant and which were extremely fragile. And that in turn dropped the CVT "reputation" as a whole technology, especially in the US, despite it not being inherent to the technology itself, and other factories' designs being way more reliable.

@Tvorsk@meow.social You're not wrong, but even Subaru's CVTs which are probably as beefy as you're going to find had trouble. I think most of the issues have been worked out on 2015+ models, but earlier Gen 5/4 models that included CVTs had known problems. @SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt

@adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Oh yeah on a Subaru I would definitely avoid CVT transmissions. The Subaru boxer engines themselves are already fragile enough as is, don't want to add another point of failure there.

@SuperDicq@minidisc.tokyo Their CVTs are better than the competitors. The newer engines and the old EZ36 (which I drive) are bulletproof. The older 4 cylinders had a bunch of problems with like head gaskets and stuff. @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt

@adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Boxer engine + CVT + 4WD system sounds exactly like the type of car I would never wanna work on.

@adiz@soc0.outrnat.nl @Tvorsk@meow.social @chrisisgr8@tech.lgbt Oh yeah the EZ36 is fine. They indeed do not have reliability issues like the old EJs.
