If you wanted to donate to make web browsers better, what would you do with it? I'm sure the most immediate thing people would think is the Mozilla foundation, but I'm wondering what other options there are.#askfedi #askfediverse #browsers

I'm pretty sure donations to Mozilla go to buy the CEO another boat. How do you define "better"? Faster? Better privacy? Something else?

@gabriel mozilla is the only real option. palemoon is basically one furry downstream of mozilla. idk if brave takes donations but they are largely downstream of chrome even if they do.

@cjd@pkteerium.xyz Better would definitely be up to the person responding. Part of why I'm asking the fedi is that I'm wondering in terms of improving the technological attributes (privacy/efficiency/features).For example, if there was a serious competitor to chrome/firefox that would probably be worth supporting these days, for the reason you brought up.

It's probably best to support 3rd candidate browsers like Brave, because it puts pressure on The Big Two to up their game.

@gabriel It is probably a waste of money. Software developers are like vtuber streamers. If you donate to the ones owned by a big org, then you aren't even directly supporting them. If you donate to a popular independent, it will make no difference to them or what they produce.Though, there is value in donating to a small unpopular independent. It will be both noticed, and directly contribute to them producing more content. In the spirit of, don't donate if it wont make a meaningful difference, I would say, there are always opportunities. I sure don't regret supporting P's efforts to create revolver. And, so, just keep your money until you see a good one!

@gabriel given the funding situation at Mozilla, I’m unconvinced that giving them donations would do more than help Google.I’d use the money to buy services from Brave or some other smaller browser company that’s trying to build a business that doesn’t rely on Google.

@gabriel I'd donate to make #lokinet better. I am pretty happy with Firefox already, I just want to see privacy pushed to its maximum.
