Sci-fi and fantasy do not belong in the same category. One I actively enjoy, and the other is something I'll watch or read if I'm bored enough. I know there's a lot of crossover, but I can't find the stuff I'm interested in because it's always buried in a huge pile of something that to me is completely unrelated.

@hosford42 I view it like arts and sciences... the two seem unrelated until you dig really deep into them(But for practical purposes this just means you narrow search parameters by a lot...)

@Aviva_Gary Absolutely, magic is just technology that's beyond the viewer's understanding. But this helps me zero when it comes to picking out a movie to watch. I enjoy the way writers treat technology that is comprehensible to the imagination. But technology that is beyond the understanding opens things up to excuses, hand-waving, and glossing over, which leaves me bored and annoyed. It's like trying to play a game when the rules change on a whim.

Preferences aside, is it just me, or programming pretty much fulfills definition of ritual magic?

@8petros @hosford42 Alan Moore believes in all seriousness that writers and artists are spellcasters who use the magic of words and imagery to put thoughts into others' minds. I can't disagree. 😁

@courtcan @8petros And if you look at a brain as a wetware computer, the parallel to programming is there, too!

Thus, we are on a path to mage make ScFi and Fantasy one again! Also, as I read in an essay on speculative fiction some 40 years ago, it is not about emergence of a unicorn or a time machine - it is about how people (or other species) and their society react and reshape around such phenomenon. If a story fails this test, SciFi or not, it is not worth reading.

@8petros @hosford42 Not at all just you. I'm convinced that this is why there is such broad overlap between the software and magick communities. Both are based on the axiom "If I craft the rituals properly, I can achieve anything that's possible."

Both programming and self-programming, through ritual or chaotic magic - check.

@hosford42 I love both genres, although fantasy is more my style. But I always hate it when bookstores stick the two genres together. They are most definitely not the same.

@courtcan Right! Even for people who really like both, it's possible to be in the mood for one and not the other. Why constantly cram them into the same space?

Fantasy is obviously older sister here, so perhaps this is why. SciFi evolved as a branch and has not fully separated yet.

@hosford42 you can tell who doesn't like sci-fi/fantasy because they don't know or care about the distinction.I enjoy both, but I will fight you if you call LotR sci-fi or Dune fantasy 🙃

@hosford42 @pathfinder This whole thing is correctHowever, I think what you are getting at is there needs to be rules (for whatever you're peddling) and if there's not no buenoIt also doesn't help (these days) very very creators think about their rules they just do

@ketmorco @hosford42 No way is LotR sci-fi, but I can see an argument for classing Dune as fantasy. It's premise is literally "magic boy is destined to save the world".

@duckwhistle @hosford42 I mean, "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" - but just because there's magic doesn't mean that it's fantasy 😝

@ketmorco @duckwhistle I guess it comes down to the question, do the laws of physics as we currently know them allow for this? If you need to trash them and start over, it's fantasy. If the same ones could conceivably hold, it's sci-fi. And of course that all depends on the level and type of ignorance (we think) we have about those laws. But when it comes to entertainment, there are certain things that get my imagination to engage, and spellcasting isn't one of them. Space, science, aliens, technology, and the far future all do that for me. And that's really the dividing line, entertainment-wise, IMO.
