The whole #threads fiasco is a no-win situation for #mastodon, IMHO.If a majority of instances #defederate with #threads, then #meta and zuck can claim mastodon is hostile and move on to the #extend part of "embrace-extend-extinguish" and create proprietary features. If a majority of instances #federate and accept threads, Meta and Zuck will embrace it but continue to #extend and eventually take defacto control of the #ActivityPub protocol.@Gargron, good luck threading this needle, man! 👍

@shrikant if he was worried about it, I'd say he wouldn't have coordinated with them in the first place. There's already about 42% of all instances blocking threads. This is going to fracture Fedi as we know it.

@BeAware In some sense, that is kinda okay, because the fedi was always built to be "fractured" but I absolutely know and understand what you mean. And, honestly, I don't have a clue as to where we'd even begin an 'un-fracturing' process, if there was even such a thing... 🤷♂️

@shrikant You really created a fantastic scenario that is about as connected with reality as BJP is with good governance. Mastodon is NOT the only one on Activitypub. Plus threads can literally stand alone on its own, not bother going further with their current plans and would still have a few hundred million users. If you were to truly look as to why they are building out - censorship and policing.

@shrikant @Gargron #Mastodon doesn't have enough users for EEE to apply here. Pretty much all active users care about privacy and avoiding big social media. #Threads joining #Fediverse gives users the chance to follow people there, without sharing their data with #Meta. It's like using searx* instead of google. You still get to use Google results, but without sharing your data with them.*Searx is a meta search engine that gets its results from other search engines.

@hirad Yup, agree that Mastodon doesn't have enough users to 'worry' threads/Meta. But the EEE applicability has more to do with ActivityPub rather than the platform itself. It's akin to Chrome dictating direction for W3C. I'm hoping ActivityPub (and thus Mastodon, Lemmy, etc.) gains enough ground to go the way of email RFCs & RSS rather than W3C.Searx is still dependent on the whims of Google. If, tomorrow, Google demands them to share your data, they'll find it difficult, right?@Gargron

@emaechler @Gargron And that's what I'm hoping. But I suspect Mastodon has a majority of the fediverse userbase. Or, at least enough to impact the direction of the most crucial thing that could decide who controls it.ActivityPub.

@shrikant @Gargron No, because searx doesn't collect any data to share. And that's the point. As long as Mastodon doesn't change its practice, Meta can't do anything.

@shrikant @Gargron i dont think so - a free network protocol can not controlled by a single corporate - or this is not a free protocol. they should have some protection build into the organisation for that reason...
