Let's see how rigorous this was... They do explain their methodology, but they do not provide exact number of samples, they use the statement "researchers" without establishing who those researchers are and if they are a third party or trained in analysis; etc.

@ai6yr As a former Tesla Model S driver I can confirm that I never had so many near-accidents or dangerous situations while driving it compared to any other cars I owned before or afterwards. Not sure exactly why, but I attribute it to the huge middle flat screen that you are forced to use even for the most basic functions like changing the heating, radio station etc. You are literally encouraged to look at the screen and take your eyeballs off the front windshield. While most cars have physical knobs that do not change with every software update, I never have to search for any controls and can operate them without looking at them.I remember that once in the morning when I entered into Tesla car, I was greeted with a release notes screen after a nightly software update and literally the whole screen, including the front dashboard, was reorganized. Stuff like this doesn't contribute to drivers safetly. I consider it harmful.I sold the Tesla three years after purchase and never looked back. I could tell so many stories about sub-standard quality of Tesla components.

@louis @ai6yr This year I was close to signing on a new Subaru, but at the very last moment backed out because nearly all dashboard functions were on the new large touchscreen, including HVAC and audio controls like volume, all of which should be controllable with eyes on the road. I ended up having to buy a used car a model year back to get real knobs. It's not just removing eyes from the road-the lack of tactile sensation from touchscreens mean attention is diverted far longer as well.

@louis @ai6yr I test drove the Ioniq 6 specifically looking to see if it had functional knob controls, not this full screen stuff. Happy to report it did! I’m waiting to see if they’ll get me a NACS conversion plug, but I think that’s my next car.

@louis @ai6yr that's ... terrifying. There's a reason why commercial airline pilots are type certified and interfaces really don't change between updates. Commonality, and "knowing' where a control is is paramount. Muscle memory is a good thing.Changing things up means distractions at times when distractions are the most dangerous.

@louis @ai6yr This doesn't seem accurate. On the Model S, the speedometer is over the wheel. As for stuff like turning on the wipers, it either happens automatically or you can use voice commands.

@louis @ai6yr I think that is a major part of it and I’d guess the other contributing factors are the acceleration and the regenerative braking. The acceleration is substantially quicker than all but very high performance ICE cars. Regarding the regenerative braking, Tesla & other electric cars slow dramatically without engaging the brakes or activating the brake light.

@TruthSandwich @ai6yr I never said the speedometer was an issue (except that it lagged here and there or one time the whole front dashboard froze three times on a row and I had to do a hard-reset while I was driving in the snow, not very pleasant). Also, voice commands? Really? Have you ever used voice commands in a non-English speaking country and experienced how they do not work at all? I don't want to read a manuel and remember 30 different voice commands just to operate a car.

@louis @ai6yr I literally used "turn on windshield wipers" and it worked, but I'm sure there are other ways to express this command that also work. I've never had any trouble getting it to understand me.This is a non-issue.

@thatKomputerKat @ai6yr @W6KME @louis It's a lot easier for the manufacturer. If you look at the control panel on a car with physical buttons, every piece on it has to be designed, engineered, physically printed, and wired up.If you make 1M cars then each little button is actually 1M little buttons. Each knob is 1M knobs. Each panel cutout is 1M panel cutouts. If a button needs to be moved 1cm to the right, that's 1M new little buttons, 1M panel cutouts and your old ones are garbage.

@tob @thatKomputerKat @ai6yr @W6KME Yes, contrary to its own marketing, Tesla is all about cheap production. On the Model S I had, I once opened the roof window while I drove on the highway and guess what happened? It has bent! And it happend right after I picked up the Tesla from the service after they had to swap the battery, so I just turned around and waited another few days to get my car back.I can tell you that I owned many luxury cars and I never experiences something like that, even with high speeds allowed on the highways in Germany.

@TruthSandwich @ai6yr It is an issue. Because people talk to other people or are in a voice call while driving. So, interrupting a conversation on the phone just turn on wipers? If that is the new standard I would rather use different types of transports."Oh, boss, can you please wait a minute, I have to figure out how to turn on the wipers...", Command: "Tesla: turn on the wipers" ... "I did not understand you, please repeat.", "Tesla: turn on the wipers", "ok, you call has been cancelled"... thank you Elon 🤣

@louis @thatKomputerKat @ai6yr @W6KME That lines up with my (admittedly limited) experience. The car looks nice, but it *feels* cheap. It also seems to line up with what might be called the "Musk Engineering Philosophy": Why go to the effort of making things nice when you can just say you did?

@louis @ai6yr Again, this is not a real issue. If it had been raining even a little bit harder, the wipers would have turned themselves on.I don't use the voice call for extended periods so I've literally never had to wonder how it works with voice recognition. I mean, I've used voice recognition to start a call while driving and that was a hell of a lot safer than the alternative, but I've never had a pressing need to turn on wipers while on the phone.

@tob @thatKomputerKat @ai6yr @W6KME To be fair, I never had to pay a single dime for all the many repairs that Tesla had to do in the car, and these were many, and it was the first Tesla Model S that was released. They also always provided a replacement car for no cost, always (which is unusual). Though, since Tesla service stations are rare, it took me always several hours and when you have a busy life, it was sometimes difficult to spare the time.Tesla disrupted the auto industry and for that they deserve credit.

@louis @ai6yr "flat screen that you are forced to use even for the most basic functions like changing the heating, radio station etc."All of these are controllable by voice commands, and these can be safer to use than buttons. I can say, "play wkrp on the radio" while driving instead of fumbling with buttons or a screen.

@TruthSandwich @ai6yr You may not know that, but voice commands were not even enabled when I owned the car between 2017-2019 in my country, because Tesla did not have the resources to implement our language.

@TruthSandwich What, you did not anticipate that Musk would do something foolish with all the money he extracts from his Tesla shares? What a pity! 🙂 Joking aside, I think that Tesla has the potential to recover from its bad reputation (even after killing many people with their half-backed self-driving feature) when Musk steps down. I can agree on that with you.

@louis To be honest, no, I did not realize that he was a fucking fascist. If I'd known that, I'd have waited until an acceptable non-Tesla EV hit the market before switching to one.Unfortunately, I do not anticipate Musk stepping down. Musk is evil and that evil leaks. For example, there is a pattern of persistently screwing over buyers who get stuck with defects.https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/20/tesla-blamed-drivers-for-failures-of-parts-it-long-knew-were-defective.html
