Windows XP is perfectly usable. I wonder what exactly changed in the programming in Vista onwards made Windows require over 4x as much CPU and 20x as much memory. I am talking about core Windows not .NET applications.

@Moon Windows 7 is perfectly usable. I wonder what exactly changed in the programming in 10 onwards to make Windows require a fuckton more RAM as well as mandatory SSD for decent drive performance and drive indexing.

@itsover 7 ran better on the same hardware than Vista but the memory savings of XP are dramatic even over 7.

@Moon there was also a "tiny XP". I used it for a while without problems, it used even less resources.

@ilja I wonder how small you could get the memory footprint. I am pretty sure I've run it in 96MB of memory. That just isn't enough for some data you're working with!

@Moon @ilja NTDev on Musksite pushed the boundaries of different Windows versions for memory capacity pretty well

@Moon well there's the natural increase from 64 bit addressing, prefetch and superfetch services, whatever overhead the compositor and UAC added, adjustments to the pagefile behavior and a default preference for keeping background services performant and stable over whatever is foreground.. plenty of break key shortcuts too so probably a process for each of those.

@mikoto @ilja at a previous job a couple years ago I had to install SP3 to get Powershell RPC on some specialized VMs running XP. SP3 really increased the memory usage a lot.

@mikoto @ilja Incidentally I was speculating about the differences, one is Windows 10 is much more secure against rootkits than XP. I know that because part of the reason I was installing XP on hundreds of VMs was for rootkit research.
