What’s important here is we’re going to end up with significant chunks of the fedi in both camps, and we should plan accordingly. https://social.tchncs.de/@mialikescoffee/111606781070232406

If Joe on a Threads-federated instance follows Sue on a Threads-blocking instance, and boosts a post by Sue, Joe's followers on Threads then see Sue's post, right? It would be cool if there was a way to prevent that, while still allowing Joe to follow Sue.

@misc I believe the answer is yes because otherwise you'd have to federate block lists with the message in order for other servers to know you've blocked a serverThere are ways around this that don't compromise security (object capabilities etc) but they are pretty far out in terms of implementation

@darius @misc I don't think that's the case? an Announce activity can in principle embed the object being announced, but afaik every major implementation references it by url. so the receiver of the Announce (Threads) would have to dereference the announced object, which would fail if Sue's instance enforces signed fetch

Getting conflicting answers on this, seems like an extremely important question! Suffice to say, if a queer or otherwise marginalized person on a Threads-blocking instance can easily be boosted into the awareness of Libs of Tik Tok, then defederating Threads is insufficient to protect users, and we may see a full schism.

@shadowfacts did mastodon stop doing that? they used to embed the whole object if it was ld signed.
