I now know what went wrong! Our mail server adds a horrible "safelinks.protection.outlook.com" part to the URL, and so the @SIGIRlist moderators rejected the mail. And rightly so! Our server adds this because.... I don't know whyyyyyyyyy 😠(they're afraid WE are sending phishing emails?)

@djoerd I'll gladly join! I already wrote about all this mess a while back: https://proycon.anaproy.nl/posts/rant-against-centralising-e-mail/ .. I simply stopped using the official mail and had to set an autoreply for people to mail at my own mailserver.

@djoerd reminds me of this time when I spent two days trying to figure out why some of people using a service I was responsible were getting the password reset links I was sending them, but they were all expired.All of these people were using Outlook. MS decided that clicking these links to "check for phishing" is the right thing to do, and since they were one-time links...Ffs.

@djoerd Maybe some kind of open letter to those in power? That would at least send a signal that there are people who have serious concerns with this shift to outsource vital infrastructure to big-tech parties and undermine the pillars of a decentralised internet doing so..

@djoerd We have the same problem at the KNAW, I wouldn't be surprised if more universities and research institutes fell prey to Microsoft. It might perhaps make a stronger case to address it jointly over multiple institutes?

@cnx @djoerd Thanks, but a global scale might be overstretching things I fear, we'd need enormous international momentum to make a dent I suppose (would be great but maybe not so feasible). I'd already be happy if we manage to influence some decision makers in academia here in the Netherlands.
