Hey, Linux Community, need some help, after installing ProtonVPN for Unbuntu on Linux Mint, the login Screen changed after a reboot to Unbuntu and I also got the choice too boot into Unbuntu Deskop, I did not find a way to change it back to default, uninstallation also does not fix the problem, does anyone know how to fix it?#linux #linuxmint #foss #opensource #privacy #cybersecurity #dataprotection

@voxelYou may installed software components from Ubuntu with this App.. if you used a Manuel with some shell commands.. try to "remove" all installed components instead of apt "install"..... from the manuel... and if it easyer for you - reinstall Linux Mint ^^

@deliri That is what I think too, I just don't exactly know what it did installed since you had to install a .deb package first, add a apt repo and then install the actual Client and Tray Icon (https://protonvpn.com/support/official-ubuntu-vpn-setup/)

@voxelIf you using https://protonvpn.com/support/official-ubuntu-vpn-setup/ to install.. the bad things proberly happen there:sudo apt install libayatana-appindicator3-1 gir1.2-ayatanaappindicator3-0.1 gnome-shell-extension-appindicatorMaybe the "gnome-shell-extension-appindicator" needed some more Ubuntu packages to use the extension. Cinnamon is based on Gnome3 but it isnt like that, its the cinnamon shell, not like Ubuntu, wich use the standard Gnome3

@voxel @deliri They do not support other versions of Linux than those listed, Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora. The Ubuntu version you installed dragged in the unity desktop. It looks like their client is a work in progress on other versions oif Linux. It is not safe to assume that ´if it works on Ubuntu then it will on Mint´. Unfortunately 😉 If your /home folder is on a separate partion. The easiest solution may well be to reinstall Mint.Proton SHOULD have been explicit about the changes

@HereToChewGum @deliri Oh, thank you for making me aware of this.It is not safe to assume that ´if it works on Ubuntu then it will on Mint´. Unfortunately 😉 Yea.. didn't expected it to cause such big issues, I btw. resolved the issue by using Timeshift to set it back. I will be more careful in the future 😅

@voxelUbuntu switched back to Gnome3 from Unity while at the same time they stopped Development of the Ubuntu Touch for Mobile..This was about 4-5 years ago?Normaly i would say it isn't a Problem to install such app. But in this case you needed for a working App the "gnome-shell-extension". While Cinnamon is based on Gnome3, there isn't a gnome-shell in Linux Mint, cause the Mint Devs wrote there own cinnamon-shell for there own Desktop Environment (Cinnamon)@HereToChewGum

@voxelBut dont worry about Gnome3 Apps to install in Linux Mint... normaly they work.. unless they need the gnome-shell or/and extension whateverI hope i'm nearly right with my comments? 😅@HereToChewGum
