@mttaggart I am trying to figure out how prepare my kids for the next 5-10 years of the quality of information just cratering. Kinda also wondering what the lift would be to maintain a home deny-list of all domains hosting AI content.

@johnelamb Honestly, I'm wondering myself if it's worth archiving Wikipedia like RIGHT NOW and storing it on optical media as well as SSDs. Same with any other critical resource.

@mttaggart obviously it wouldn’t be automated. It’s be more like “oh, this website is offering AI generated content, some life story before a recipe, or is pretending to have manuals and troubleshooting, but doesn’t. Time to block this website and or host or cdn or hell, registrar”

@johnelamb John, truthfully, I am deeply pessimistic about this. The genie is out of the bottle and as long as getting people to engage with content is profitable, that's the ballgame. Something drastic is going to need to happen to protect facts, or we'll be talking about the "Era of Truth" that ended in 2024.

@mttaggart and I really mean this orthogonally to free speech/censorship. I vastly prefer good smut, or a violent FPS with a good story over this… wideband jamming.

@mttaggart it’s not an easy problem. Humans are not adapted to do the like Carl-Sagan-all-the-time level of skeptical inquiry that will be required. I think I need to buy a bunch of used books.

@mttaggart I also wonder though, if we’ll end up like making a markdown only sort of shadow internet on the theory that a network that can shove 4K video around for cheap could allow ascii through mostly unnoticed.

@mttaggart and I guess we could like vet non shit commits with our public signing key, and base reputation on that. This is veering in the direction of butt-coin and I don’t mean something that would require burning down rain forests, but like something that’s reliable enough without requiring absurd computation.
