Before the internet, we had a pocket encyclopedia and a dictionary on the coffee table so we could look things up when having drinks with friends, if someone said something questionable.

@StillIRise1963 Then the Internet became a vast teach-in, and later the far right rose up to kick sand in everyone's eyes. These objects, the old encyclopedia and dictionary, can be viewed as the products of innocence or quiet repression. But I don't know how "innocent knowledge" can be a thing.

@tasket You lost e at "products of innocence or quiet repression" and with "innocent knowledge." Please explain further.

@StillIRise1963 @tasket I think they mean (I could be very wrong but this was my take) not all knowledge is found in just *one* book, and if it assumed it is that can be a blinder to the greater world out there...But I am generally not in the business of speaking for others... I just know this happened to me when I knew more than the textbook and the teacher (and class) was scared of me lol 😜

@Aviva_Gary If they did, in fact, mean that, it assumes ignorance on the part of the participants which is an incorrect assumption. All of us knew how to read in the full sense of the word. Critically analyze too.l@tasket@mastodon.social

@Aviva_Gary @StillIRise1963 It expresses my wariness about 'old school' reference books; there was too much whitewashing and omission, a presumption of cultural innocence. My family wasn't intellectual enough to have this habit of reaching for encyclopedias in casual conversation – that was for doing homework. 🤷 Nobody I grew up with knew about Howard Zinn or other "rebel" historians.Today, people are likely to reach for Wikipedia. I would consider that a marked improvement.
