What I find interesting, and maybe coinciding with the EU release of Threads? is that there seems to be this big push from “”leftists”” that your vote doesn’t matter and that you should just give up because to vote left is to support genocide, and you should vote third party instead. These posts claim to be the true leftists and anyone to the right of them is a centrist/right winger. You dig down and you find a lot of these accounts are just MAGA in disguise.

Obviously there are people not happy with Biden and I’m not saying those feelings are invalid! But there seems to be a massive misinformation campaign trying to capitalize on people not being happy with Biden and trying to convince people to feel like voting is a wasted effort and they should just stay home, laying the path for fascism to once again win. Don’t fall for it.

@xodium It's not just Europe, and it's not just Threads. I get this on Mastodon constantly. Someone actually called me a fascist for saying that they should hold their nose and vote straight ticket Democrat *because* the only mathematically possible alternative is a Republican administration, which would be worse.

@mos_8502 @xodium I deeply resent the American political system for making "straight ticket voting" seem reasonable, much less necessary. It seems immoral to me, above and beyond the fact that no party represents me at all well.In general, the choices of "more of, ugh, THIS" or "an utterly arbitrary tyranny with not even the veneer of constitutional restraint" does less than you might think to get people voting. Despair is a powerful de-motivator.

@xodium Even if the person saying those things actually is the leftist they claim to be, and not an astroturfing MAGAt, they are at best an ass-backwards idealist who is convinced there can be some kind of mass change of consciousness that magically saves the world from fascism. That isn't how the world works, and actual adults know this.

@publius @xodium That’s all there is. I don’t like it either. Not voting won’t change it.

@mos_8502 @xodium If people feel they have to spend all their time voting "against" and never "for", when they never have a choice that's not "pick the lesser of two evils", they're eventually going to give up on democracy. And I think we've been seeing that happen for a long time.

@publius @xodium The continual failure of the actual left to articulate to the body politic a viable alternative to the current repeating dilemma is to blame for that.
