@clive Pretty much nothing. They don't seem anywhere near as good at keeping you awake as they're billed as being. They taste bad when they warm up a bit. They mostly just seem to be a mildly caffeinated mixer.

@n3wjack @clive Exactly this. The first time I had Red Bull, I thought it tasted like someone had liquified a Jolly Rancher candy and added carbonation. If I was going to liquify a candy, Jolly Rancher would not be very high up on my list of options. The second (and last) time I had Red Bull was at my bachelor party. It was combined with Jagermeister and I was too drunk to notice how it tasted.

@Edent @clive I've never drunk Red Bull, but I did hear an explanation once on Radio 4. The stimulants in Red Bull enable you to drink alcohol past the point where you would normally pass out. This makes the combination of Red Bull and alcohol especially dangerous.

@clive @davatron5000 tbh I never got why energy drinks have this aura of being so full of caffeine. 12 oz of Red Bull is 114mg caffeine. Mayo Clinic says 12oz coffee is 144, and I see some saying 165mg. And I see a LOT of people drinking from 18, 20oz mugs.Per fluid volume, drip coffee has more caffeine.

@clive cuz coffee and sugar are addictive and there are old school billionare oligarchs who make money from addictions? i used to joke with students that the new trade routes for spices was a charade. they weren't spending the equivalent of billions to get nutmeg for their cakes. spices has always been a short-hand. i mean, Coca-Cola didn't have coca in it. it had cocaine. why? coca is not addictive but cocaine is.

@clive I've tried coffee on occasion and it has never been agreeable to me. But if it works for you, more power to you. (Incidentally, there are coffee-based Monster drinks, but I can't say much about them. I just know they exist.)

@clive The first time I had a red bull I experienced perfect photographic memory for an hour or so (it was before an exam at uni, and I found I could visualise my notes so clearly I could "read" them in my mind). It happened that first time, and never again after that (subsequently it just seemed like an unremarkable, overly sweet caffeinated drink). Very strange.

@clive I basically only ever drink it while driving, so Iād say: a quick way to get weirdly flavored caffeine in a small can, and itās nearly always available (but even worse tasting) sugar-free.On long road trips I bounce between (much preferred) unsweetened iced tea, diet mtn dew (high school memories), and Red Bull. The latter is the *only* drink consistently available in a non-plastic container, is not a huge volume, and is reasonably tolerable.Otherwise itās plastic bottles all day š£
