My back was killing me, and I couldn’t wait to get to the gym. Then I was sure it was trying to kill me. It feels so much better now, though.I am soooo sympathetic to the idea of being too sore to move. For me, the movement is the only thing that makes it stop. (Now, coupled with mindfulness to make that first step: “yep, that’s a pain sensation I’m experiencing. Hi, pain!”)

@tek It’s ironic that the natural reaction to “ouch, that hurts” is to not move the very thing that needs motion in order to get unfucked, thereby making the problem worse.

@mpirnat Ain’t that the truth. I wish I could override my nervous system: “yes, I know you’re sending me that pain signal on purpose, and I appreciate that you’re trying to help, but please stop now OK?”The mindfulness helps an awful lot with that, but requires more self awareness than I can muster sometimes.

@tek I am going to the gym tomorrow for the first time after hurting my back weeks ago. My body's response to pain is to immobilize by tightening the muscles more and more until they seize. Hopefully, I can avoid that tomorrow.

@binaryequation Same here, very much. Good luck with it! I started with about half an hour on the treadmill to force myself to loosen up and move.

@tek I'm bringing the stretches I got in PT and I will add those to my warmup.
