@JugglingWithEggs @GhostOnTheHalfShell European fascists are generally not fans of folks who look like Sunak. I don’t understand how he doesn’t see that.

@michaelgemar @JugglingWithEggs They work for fascists. The fascists that fund him, Braverman, and Vivek are not ideological in the same way. (I tend to think they all were grown in the same vat; they are so creepy in similar ways.)Billionaire fascists have a distinct project from fascism a century ago. It’s about dismantling the idea of democracy and market societies, restoring, in effect, a world structured like Ancient Rome, of plutocracy. This is the intent of Koch and his friends.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michaelgemar @JugglingWithEggs I call it "the patron-client society" because that's a much more descriptive name than "plutocracy", which doesn't imply much to most people.

@publius @michaelgemar @JugglingWithEggs Prolly Ancient Roman social structure captures it the most.Plutocracy (rule by the wealthy) implies patronage system. It was a core element of Roman economy in addition to slavery.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @michaelgemar @JugglingWithEggs Perhaps, but it's not descriptive, so it only works for people who have some knowledge of the Classical world. And how many is that, these days?(I've been reading the Philippic orations of Demosthenes. Depressing how applicable they still are.)

@publius @GhostOnTheHalfShell @michaelgemar plutocracy is not well understood, despite the best efforts of Mary Beard and ironically Boris Johnson in recent years to get the Classics more into public discourse. The notion of society being run in interests of the 1% (or 0.1%) is better recognised but fundamentally I don’t think people understand the extent to which the wealth gap has ballooned in 25yrs. Need to spell out exploitation without saying socialism .
