This is crazy. @anderspuck I wonder if the verdict is based on the fact that “Warthog” is synonymous with the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft. Maybe Fairchild Republic trademarked “Warthog” as a brand name at some point, because that became the popular name for the plane.

@randahl It’s still weird if YouTube didn’t provide more information on the reasons. I am always a bit skeptical when these stories come up, because YouTube doesn’t have any interest in acting unprofessional about it.

@anderspuck I feel the same. But I would not be surprised if this could be caused by an army of bots or malicious actors all reporting a channel for the same violation. I have seen examples of this on Facebook.

@randahl @anderspuck This smells like a Russian campaign. I doubt that some big corporation would go after a well-known YouTube channel for using a word that they may or may not have trademarked. @VikingChieftain @randahl Not the individual moderator, but YouTube has a system for these things. I would not be surprised to learn that he had received several warnings before they took this step.

@anderspuck @VikingChieftain @randahl Twitter had a system for all of that too. A lot of us in NAFO got mass reported by russians that got their feelings hurt and got banned. My account had been active since the earliest days of Twitter and all I got in the email that I was harassing users. I was posting memes, like we do because that's our job. I never got a response on my appeal. These things are the responsibility of tired overworked kids and expecting justice is a pipe dream.

@anderspuck @randahl I think you're operating under a misconception about how google works. These systems are largely automated to avoid hiring people and very susceptible to negative manipulation by state actor troll farms. If you follow pro ukraine youutubers they are getting hit with all kinds of things routinely. Demonetization is a common attack vector. I assume you've read Putins Trolls. You're assuming radically more competence from youtube than reality warrants. Easy for FSB trills.

@hakuin @randahl There is no automatic system that would get a channel deleted. A video demonetized, yes. Applying age restrictions, yes. But not a channel deletion without warning and without appeal.

@anderspuck @randahl you have far more faith in these large tech companies than I do. It's not just automation. It's cynical negative manipulation by experts. I suffer from having dealt with the reality of google for work for far too long to gave any such misplaced faith in their competence or technical skills. I was honestly surprised by you guys seeming to believe google has a level of internal sophistication because they are a mega tech corporation. If anything the opposite is the case.

@anderspuck @randahl No, it is precisely because I do that I am concerned about Google's competence and internal methods. What I am cnncerned about is the trust in these for profit corporations that are at very best opaque internally. I'm also concerned about the belief in competence where none has been demonstrated. This strikes me almost as a European sort of bias towards these American corporations, sort of the outsider's look in. I've been concerned for a while how easy it is to manipulate.

@anderspuck @randahl that's possible, though the original video guy had talked to him at some length via messaging and seems to be the most knowledgeable about what actually happened. That's why he put out the red flag alert we're talking about here, it wasn't an accident, he wanted a light to shine on this in public. I just think it's more likely the FSB trolls have been busy. They're pretty slick, but also sort of predictable. Like all shills of all types.

@anderspuck @randahl What I take issue is not a particular instance of incompetence, but rather the notion that social media can handle this type of thing at all when they have literally never demonstrated the ability to do so. So rather than suggesting some exception of incompetence, I'm suggesting no such competence has ever existed. It's core to the model of social media, which makes money off emotion and dopamine. This is admitted, Elon was stupid for not grasping this first principle.
