Now that Threads is available in Europe, I have created an account there. My first impression is positive. I think it has a lot more potential than Bluesky. I am not leaving Mastodon, but I do think Threads is interesting. If you want to find me there, my handle is @anderspuck.

@anderspuck unfortunately, I think they are going to destroy the #fediverse unless we defederate...https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

@EvilCartyen I don’t think so, but a problem with the discussion is also that there are very different visions of what the Fediverse should be. If, like me, you would like to see hundreds of millions of daily users in the Fediverse, then we have to accept that the big players are also here.

@folfdk Yes, I meant you would have to type the handle in the Threads app. I couldn’t figure out how to make Mastodon not make my handle clickable. For the time being only a few Threads accounts are federated as a test, so you can’t follow the account in Mastodon (yet).

@anderspuck - I prefer not to be the mouse walking into the new improved mousetrap that Meta has created.

@anderspuck @EvilCartyen Why not have hundreds of millions of users on many decentralized, open and non-commercial or low profit instances? I don’t see why the fediverse would need big corporations for that. How is Meta supposed to make profit from Threads, without working against the objectives of an open fediverse? If there is a way, what would stop them from doing so to make even more profit?

@kjuh @EvilCartyen If they can make an attractive platform that many people choose to use, then they can probably make a fair sum of money on ads. I don't think it has to be a walled garden for that to work for them.

@anderspuck @EvilCartyen Thats the first step. The next would be to get rid of competition. As soon as Threads has a sufficient userbase to be self sufficient they will start to „improve“ over the open standards with proprietary tech, making federation increasingly unfeasible, luring more people over until they ARE what the fediverse could have been. https://ploum.net/2023-06-23-how-to-kill-decentralised-networks.html

@kjuh @EvilCartyen Maybe, but I am not convinced. The existence of alternatives like Mastodon will solve a range of regulatory issues and allow Threads to have distinct moderation practices. I don't think it's in their interest to destroy other platforms as long as they can just keep those who are happy to see ads.

@benjamim Yes, of course. :-) One thing I have learned from this whole Twitter farce is also that most people actually prefer an algorithmic timeline. Personally I’ve always preferred just to have posts in chronological order but apparently that has been an obstacle for growth that people find it complicated to figure out.

@anderspuck @EvilCartyen I don’t need to be „convinced“. The fact that we did see similar developments before, is enough for me to realise there‘s a considerable risk. That risk has to be handled & I don’t think embracing an enemy I don’t trust & who would be capable to win a fight, is a safe way to deal with such risks…(I don’t want to force any parallels here, but maybe some come to mind.)

@kjuh @EvilCartyen Yes, and that brings us back to the somewhat contradictory visions for what the fediverse should be. https://krigskunst.social/@anderspuck/111589558279125871

@anderspuck @EvilCartyen Nope. Why? I don’t think this size and significance is impossible without Meta.Sometimes values are more important than fast growth. I would have thought we learned that the hard way recently…But let’s just agree to disagree for now.

@anderspuck @anderspuck wait until #meta is launching adverts on #threads and think about all the data they collect.
