Yes Meta has issues, yes they’ve done some shitty things. I am aware of that. But so have Apple, Google, Microsoft and almost every *insert company here*.Mastodon also had a reported issue with people using instances for child porn. The internet is often a shitty place, filled with shitty people.But we have a real genuine chance here to push social into the open like it should always have been.

@ThePlant blocking social networks from your own is fine for the open web. it's attempting to prevent others' networks from interacting with it via deplatforming campaigns that's the problem.

Muting the thread (lol) now.I firmly believe Mastodon should be open to other much bigger networks joining. It's part of the entire point of the open web and the fediverse to join together, not to be locked into single platforms again. Blocking Meta because Meta will only add to user confusion.Admins are of course welcome to block, it's a feature for a reason, just like users can block if they want.

I'm also not actually against private parts of the fediverse, or having a few in a little bubble talk to each other, that is part of the strength of the fediverse too! Options are awesome aren't they?But I don't think anyone should claim to love the open web and fedi as a whole if they're aiming to be both open and yet block bigger players.

@ThePlant 13 millions of users scattered in 20k communities federated in the fediverse are not "a little corner", but a "community of communities" deserving respect. I will continue to interact with more people than I can deal with in a "Big Corner" made of 20k platforms, and I won't feel excluded if they won't be 20001, or if my ego won't be able to count to a fake exposition to a big audience, filtered by monetization algorithms and private interests. @ThePlant But Meta is actively dismantling the open web. All of their properties are opaque and foreign to it. Facebook uses its own webview to keep you in the app and Instagram even makes it impossible to click links on mobile.

@ThePlant You're right. Everyone has the option to block domains they dislike. However, as an admin, withholding certain content from all users is not, in my opinion, the right approach and goes against the spirit of a free internet.
