With google leaving #usenet, I see the sentiment that it's a good thing. Is it the right time to start using it? Will I find someone there? :)

@mms At least there'll be way less spam, since that's where pretty much all of it has been coming from lately.

@mmsCheck the #Usenet tag and you'll see that it has many friends in the Fediverse. It may even prove to be more useful than the Fediverse. It's group structure is less noisy than the timelines here and here tags don't compensate the lack of topic-timelines or groups or such.I use other NNTP based services that aren't Usenet too and all of them living side by side in my news reader makes it difficult to say which are the most important ones. I definitely prefer mailing lists and Atom/RSS feeds via NNTP where possible. I would not want to miss any of them.

@mms99% of newsgroups are long-dead and just filled with spam, but if you happen to be in a community with an active channel it's great.Comp.Lang.Ada remains the premiere place to discuss the Ada programming language spec, get help from experts, etc. The Gemini protocol has Comp.Infosystems.Gemini (actually the first new Big Eight newsgroup created in like ten years). Some other programming languages and Comp.Infosystems.Gopher also have active communities.Otherwise there'll be a lot of digging through garbage trying to find decent groups, although I suspect with Google Group's exit, the spam will be orders of magnitudes less than it was

@jaruzel to use Reddit to escape modern (crappy) net. O tempora. I look there. Everything I found focused on warez.

@mms @janbeta A lot of spam, a lot of people arguing about mostly the same things as 20 years ago. Similar to Fidonet of today actually.

@mms Out of the two social network discussions happening today, this is the one I can get behind.
