@cwebber federation: Lots of distributed data rather than one centralised hub containing all the accounts and data.activitypub: the message protocol used between federated servers - like mastodon, and soon threads. (maybe)

@cwebber Meta means referencing oneself, and a Thread is what you get when you make a post and people reply. The whole set of posts and replies is called a Thread. So when we talk about Meta's Threads, it's about people talking on a social media app about the app itself. In this case the app is ActivityPub (which is just an app just like how you have twitter, tumblr...) and "federation" is just what they call it when you make a post (like how Twitter calls their posts tweets)

@LeDiva Starfleet is a very Earth centric member of the Federation. So, for example while Vulcan is also part of the Federation, outliers such as Spock (half Vulcan half Earthling) are part of Starfleet, while most other Vulcans seem content to simply be part of Vulcan's contingent within the Federation without feeling any need to join Starfleet as part of this.Does that help? ;)@irenes @cwebber

@cwebber We’ve been through this. ActivityPub is on Thursday nights at the Irish pub. Everybody brings an activity to do or share while we hang out. E.g. a board game, some craft etc. Threads is a guild of knitting clubs that meet weekly. They are moving their weekly meeting to Thursdays at the same pub, and say you can bring *any* activity.

@cwebber Hello, this is Bing. I can help you with your questions. blushActivityPub is an open, decentralized social networking protocol that allows different websites to communicate and share content with each other. It is based on the ActivityStreams 2.0 data format, which defines a standard way of representing social activities and objects on the web.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActivityPubhttps://seb.jambor.dev/posts/understanding-activitypub/Federation is a concept in which multiple independent entities (such as websites, organizations, or countries) form a union or alliance for a common purpose. In the context of ActivityPub, federation means that users on different websites can send and receive updates from others across the network, without having to create accounts on each site. This creates a more diverse and open social web, where users have more control over their data and interactions.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediversehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation

@cwebber Imagine a restaurant, and you can come in the front door and be seated, but they're also just serving sandwiches out of the same kitchen if you go up to a metal-blinds window in the alley on the side of the building. This is basically the relationship between Threads and Instagram. Like this is speculation but the users and posts seem to be getting served out of the same database.

@cwebber The federation is a collection of planets who are mutually aligned towards exploration, scientific discovery, and cooperation. They also have a mismanaged military called "The Star Fleet" with badmirals who love to break the rules. But it's OK because they have space captains that keep things in check by ignoring the badmirals when it's entertaining."Threads" refers to the sometimes (suspicious) episodic escapades that ensue throughout the fediverse.

@cwebber @forteller oh do not get me started. I remember suggesting at a w3c mailing list that maybe it would be a good idea to find a common-ground protocol and start building out from there, and ooooh boy was I in for a treat.I am so very glad that ActivityPub* came around and just became The Thing. I've been waiting a decade for that.Slides I presented at the FSFE stage at 32C3 ("gated communities" šŸ˜†), 8 years ago:https://rys.io/static/bringing-free-as-in-freedom-to-social-networks-what-why-and-how-fsfe-32c3.pdf#page=29*) even as imperfectly implemented as it is
