been reading about the Árpád kings (thanks for the accidental impulse @dicey) but only a select few in detail, so my knowledge of them is still the same as in school - Árpád, uhh, Géza, Stephen, blah blah blah gay little civil wars, BÉLA AND LADISLAUS WHO FOUGHT THE MONGOLS, and, uh, then other houses take over and it's a mess...

It's always fun to discover new consequences during these historical excursions for why things happened as they did. (Maybe our high school history teacher explicitly mentioned this one, I wasn't paying much attention back then.) @sim, you'll probably like this one.In 1241, the Mongols invaded Hungary. They quickly annihilated the assembled army of Béla IV in a pitched battle and proceeded to lay waste to the entire kingdom, destroying cities and plundering everything, killing everyone who resisted and raping/conscripting the rest. Béla himself had to flee to the Adriatic. At least a quarter of the population perished, either directly or from starvation. The only places that didn't fall were the few stone castles and citadels that existed, because they were not worth the hassle (at that time, most defences were still made of earth and wood). After a year, khan Ögedei died and the Mongol princes withdrew to Karakorum with their armies to elect the next Khan. Béla returned and immediately got back to work, trying to rebuild the realm in a way that another invasion could be withstood. Stone castles were built everywhere, and the military was modernized - light cavalry was transformed into more knightly troops and lots of crossbowmen were recruited, since that's what seemed to be effective. Béla himself didn't live to see the second invasion, but indeed, when four decades later the Mongols attacked again under khan Nogay (with the same exact strategy), his descendant Ladislaus IV destroyed their army in a few months. The extent of the plundering was very limited this time and most of the time, the Mongols just kept breaking their teeth at the new castles. This was despite Ladislaus objectively being a terrible ruler, and when tried to control the local nobles, he didn't have much leverage because the nobles just fortified inside their castles when conflict arose. We could say that the measures against the invaders ended up internally weaking the king himself. This was the state of affairs for the next two centuries and to the extent of my knowledge, the only king that was able to actually rule the entire kingdom with a strong fist was Matthias Corvinus (reigned 1458-1490), whose modern standing army, the Black Army, was able to consistenly win against other European monarchs, even expanding the realm westwards (see map). I concur that the Black Army would even have a chance against the Ottoman invasion in 1526. Alas, the next kings weren't able to keep up this level of control, nobles slowly.regained their autonomy and denied the kings their taxes, making the Black Army unsustainable and after a while most of the soldiers deserted.

@grips Thanks for thinking about me and sharing this information to us. I don't know that much about Hungary so it has been an interesting read. Interesting how weak the kings often were. I suppose this is why they needed a royal/state army of sorts to leverage against their enemies or those invading.

@Jens_Rasmussen @grips What else were they going to do with women back then? Conscript them into the army?

@sim Yeah, most of the European armies at the time were still just feudal levies summoned in time of need. Mass conscription wasn't a thing in Europe until... French revolution, I think.

@sim Also the Black Army was EXPENSIVE and nobles really didn't like the extra taxes. From what I know, this wasn't much of a problem in Eastern realms and of course China. Some strong central bureaucracy they had.

@sim One more thing I forgot to respond to - Hungary is certainly interesting. Around 900 AD, old Magyars stake out Pannonia as a great place to live, arrive as a nomadic horde and gradually settle. One of the chiefs eventually converts, his son is crowned the first Christian king of Hungary in 1000 AD and then it quickly matures into a kingdom of the Western type. With some differences, of course - the main one being that this was the eastern frontier of Europe, so their kingdom got smashed a bit more throughout the ages. Poland had a very similar trajectory in this era, though Poles arrived a couple of centuries earlier.

@grips @sim the Black Army is the biggest what could've been for Hungarians.
