       There is no rational reason for Mastodon to limit posts to 500 characters by default.If the limit was 100s of KB, people who still wanted to divide every thought up into a thread still could; nothing stopping them.But if someone wanted to post a gigantic essay, they also could, and I'd see a little "More >>" link and I could ignore them faster.We have decades of history proving that length limits do not make people concise: they just make people post threads.1/1

       @mirabilos @jwz In years of fedi, only time I went over Pleroma's default of 5 000 is to post a massive detailed reply that you'd maybe expect on a mailing-list.I don't think I'll need more than 9 001.

       @jwz That's why I've decided to set the limit to 5000 characters at BSD Cafe: tech stuff may require some more space than "influencer" like posts.

       @jwz 😜 And another thing...I "grew up" on the 250 char limit at Shitter, and was blown away that I have DOUBLE that, here.This is a microblog platform. IIRC, there are full-blown blogging/word processing platforms in #HephalumpWorld, as well as video sharing, and most other "common" services, that are federated. To me, it kinda like asking "why aren't there more pumpkins in the meat cooler?"They're in another part of this same "supermarket."
