Now, when pasting a long text while composing, #Fedilab will automatically split it into a thread with replies depending on your instance max chars. Mentions are automatically reported in replies to keep the visibility.Should this feature be:

@apps I like the idea, but I'll probably stay with the current thread-making tool, as choosing the right place in the text to separate into multiple toot should be my decision instead of auto-separation. So I prefer off by default :)EDIT : oh wait, it's about pasting, not composing. Hm... still off, but I like this option even better.

@apps I voted with the second one. I think, it should be disabled. I use my Friendica account with Fedilab, and the instance I'm on, allows to write up to 200K characters. I don't want it to be written as a thread by a bug. But the feature should be added.

@expert So, even by default the app will not thread it. It only happens if the text length is greater than your instance max chars.

@apps when I buy the Fediverse i'll delete threading as a feature. It only came into being because of twitter's silly charlimit.

@apps How about a "split into thread" button that only appears when you have too much text in the box? Then users can decide on a case-by-case basis.Or if that's too hard to fit into the UI, make it a popup window: "You just pasted # characters of text, but your instance only allows # characters per post. Would you like to split this into a thread of length #?" Then the popup could provide a couple options to configure, like whether they want to copy all mentions (checked by default) and what text to use as a post footer (some people might just use a thread emoji, others will want a numeric counter).I worry that if the feature is all or nothing, no confirmation or undo, people will disable it the first time they see it, and then they'll forget about it when they actually need it.

@appsI think a 'prompt by default' option would be an improvement on either offered option, as that way I could choose on a toot by toot basis whether I want auto-split.If the UI let me see and adjust where the breaks happened while writing the posts in the first place that would be awesome!

@apps Unpopular opinion: The charm of micro blogging is to think about a very concise summary of your thoughts. Extensive elaboration should be made in a downright blog post. Such services also exist in the Fediverse! 1/7 (just kidding)

@apps That's not exactly what I had in mind.I was thinking more about a"Do you want to split this message ?Yes / No"With eventually a "Do not ask again" checkbox. With enabled, disabled and prompt in the settings.

@appsI'd rather just have a button for when the text is longer than the max chars allowed to split it than having it happen automatically. If I want to edit the text to shorten it to fit in one message, it might be more difficult to do if the text has already split over multiple messages.Text selection is also rather difficult atm for cutting and pasting.
