       @micke Completely agree to this.Reducing "AI" to chatbots is just another way of reducing previous research in the subject.I remember the chatbots from the early 2000, they could do a shitton of cool stuff back then

       I have been thinking about machine learning and large language models recently in the context of work. And I feel a bit bummed about how large corporations have convinced people that they invented "AI" in recent years and that lots of people believe them and react as if that was true. The fact is that ML has been the domain of academia since the sixties and a lot of cool things have come from that. ChatGPT and other toys are nothing next to what the tools can be (and is) used for in science.

       It is true that Google contributed to science with Deep Mind and Alpha fold, which was cool of them. I'll give them that. I whish that more of the effort in the space went in that direction rather than trying to sell people crappy toys and pretending like the toys can replace human workers.

       @selea yes, and there is also a lot of cool tech that is free and open source, that you can selfhost using commodity hardware that will be useful running ethically sourced models like https://localai.io and https://tabby.tabbyml.com basically I think I am bummed about people misstaking marketing from large corporations for the stuff they are exploiting for profit.

       @micke I think that the ability to run local stuff is great, and I really hope that organisations and people starts to demand that more.People defaulting to "ChatGPT" is really really boring. I do want to run tabby at home, on my own hardware in the near future.

       @micke My main issue with "AI" right now, is how the "AI" that gets all the attention now are basically just fancy party tricks.We don't show the great effort that went into making it... We just focus on the resulting party tricks. :\
