@RyanG If that road goes north you're in for a bumpy ride...

@Alphakilopapa @RyanG My current theory (untested) is that the Romans didn't have CMVs (or any motor vehicles) driving up and down their roads at 70mph carrying multiple (tens of) tons of cargo 24/7/365. The Romans didn't salt or de-ice their roads either.

@fry @RyanG The Romans also didn't have modern technology, engineering or materials. For what we pay our roads are trash.

@Alphakilopapa @RyanG I agree. Our taxes go to anything/everything except that which would directly benefit the taxpayers.

@RyanG lol - it’s always Americans posting memes like this - come live in Europe where we still have a few of these roman roads and drive a car up and down a few times… you’ll be happy to get home to your potholes.

@dax that's not the point. Those Roman roads are thousands of years old. Modern roads only take a few years before they feel like a 2000 year old Roman road.

@RyanG the Roman roads were just as bumpy the day they were built. They also didn’t support the vehicles or traffic load that roads of today do. What fails is our top surfacing (the tarmac bit) which is what gives the smooth ride. The tradeoff for more travel comfort and vehicle performance is the need for greater road maintenance, which the government and local authorities are terrible at, hence potholes. So this is exactly the point - public policy not engineering is to blame.
